This charming one-bedroom stone cottage is set in an idyllic riverside location in Wensleydale. Nestling within a pretty village complete with a village green and pub, it's the perfect escape for couples looking for a peaceful country retreat.

Immaculately presented, the accommodation in this romantic Yorkshire cottage is all on one level. The open-plan living area is home to the lounge, kitchen and dining area, and features French doors leading out to a quiet and sheltered stone patio. The lounge has a comfy sofa to cosy up on and a living-flame stove to warm your toes by. Curl up here after a day's sightseeing and enjoy a movie with your loved one or pull up a chair by the fire and start that book you've been looking forward to for ages. There's a LCD TV with DVD and Wi-Fi is provided too.

The kitchen has shaker-style units giving this area a bright and warm appeal. Adding to the cosy and welcoming vibe of this cottage, expect to find some delicious home-baked goodies on your arrival. The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher and the cupboards are well-stocked with all of the utensils needed to rustle up a romantic dinner for two. The dining area sits next to the kitchen and is a relaxing spot to settle down and eat, whatever the time of day. Guests also have access to a larger freezer, washing machine and dryer if needed. The bedroom comes complete with a cast iron king-size bed and chunky solid oak furniture. Two windows let in streams of light and the crisp cotton bedding is a joy to wake up in each morning. The bathroom sits right next door and houses a  shower cubicle. It's also got underfloor heating and a heated towel rail, always welcome additions.

Outside, there's a lovely private patio just outside the lounge French doors. With a charming bistro table and chairs provided and the use of a BBQ, it's a heavenly spot for lunch or dinner alfresco in the warmer months. There's also a well-maintained lawn which is the perfect sun trap in the warmer months. And just down the lane within the grounds, there are plenty of places to throw down a rug by the river and enjoy a picnic with a bottle of bubbly or two.

The cottage is located in Little Crakehall, just outside the market town of Bedale. It is set in a unique heritage site with a historic working watermill which has featured in various TV programmes and films, including the BBC's Countryfile series. The village itself is very pretty, a large green is overlooked by the manor house and the pub, and there are a cricket ground and a children's park in the centre of the village. The walk to the village green from the cottage is a pleasant 5-minute stroll across the river.

Beyond the village, the handsome town of Bedale is worth a visit. Stop for a coffee before making your way around the town's antique shops. In the opposite direction, you'll find Leyburn (8.5 miles), an archetypical slice of Dales market town life where traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gather around a handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby town of Richmond (9.5 miles) is similar in many ways and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.

There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range of the cottage. Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle are both within 16 miles and the picturesque villages of West Burton and Askrigg are under 20.5 miles, so lots of choices for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise.

We are keen walkers and used this as a base to explore the surrounding area. For a long weekend there are plenty of routes directly from the cottage, so no need to drive anywhere. The cottage provides maps and guides but we would still advise that you take along OS Explorer 302. The Bay Horse Inn' (5 minutes from the cottage) was very welcoming andRead more has simple but excellent food and we joined the locals on one of their quiz nights. Hide

Perfect holiday in every way. Cottage was spotless. Alison is the perfect host. Ideally situated for exploring the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The village pub, The Bay Horse, served tasty home made food and made us feel very welcome. Lots of dog friendly places for our Old English Sheepdog Lexie. We would definitely return
