I had never heard of the term Hygge until a couple of months ago and it now seems to be everywhere. If you are unfamiliar with this Danish word it is all about creating the right ambience in your home so that it is cosy, warm and inviting.
With the weather getting colder and winter well and truly on its way I think we could all do with a little Hygge in our lives. With this in mind, here are 10 cottages (in alphabetical order) that we think have mastered the cosy and warm vibe.
#01 Barley Cottage
Barley Cottage has got ‘warm and inviting’ down to a T. Sink into a leather chair and curl up by the fire with a good book. It’s location is idyllic and if you can bear to tear yourself away from the cottage there is a super 17th century village pub just down the road.
#02 Burtersett Cottage
From it’s position in a sleepy Wensleydale village you can look out over the Dales while warming yourself by the fire. The fireplace is original as is the stone floor, while the rug and cushions add warmth and cosiness.
Don’t you just want to sink into those sumptuous sofas? The beautiful fabrics and cushions make this beautiful room the perfect place to relax with some chocolates and a glass of wine.
#04 Laykin Cottage
What could be nicer than waking up in this comfortable bed to stunning views of Swaledale? The only thing to add is breakfast in bed – what could be more comforting than that!
#05 Miller’s Croft
This charming one-bedroom cottage has everything you need for a cosy break in the country. Sit back and relax with a good book and then explore your pretty village location complete with riverside walk, village green and a lovely local pub.
#06 Nurse Cherry Cottage
If you are a fan of vintage then Nurse Cherry Cottage will be right up your street with gorgeously chic interiors. It’s the little touches though which we think really help to make guests feel right at home.
#07 Rosemary Cottage
This cottage really does hit the spot when it comes to having Hygge. Beautiful inside and out, Rosemary Cottage is the perfect country retreat. Curl up on the comfortable sofa, wrap yourself in a throw and watch a good movie – what more could you want.
#08 Seaves Cottage Brandby
This Grade II listed cottage dates all the way back to 1427 but that doesn’t mean it isn’t warm and inviting. On the contrary it is as cosy as you can get with lots of homely touches. What’s more the owners will even leave you some of their delicious (and award-winning) home made pies to enjoy.
#09 The Potting Shed
The perfect place to get away for some rest and relaxation with a loved one. Not only have the owners thought of everything you might need but they will be on hand to give you a warm welcome!
I think this living room perfectly sums up the concept of Hygge and manages to be both contemporary and cosy. Wykewood has been stunningly renovated with great attention to detail and there is even a sumptuous Balinese style wood-fired hot tub in the garden.
