4 of the best cycle routes in Yorkshire

The Pennines, the Moors, the Dales and the beautiful coastline make Yorkshire a real biking haven. And now more than ever, with the Le Tour Grand Départ fast approaching, people are realising the cyclist’s paradise that is Yorkshire and promptly jumping on their bikes to explore.

The county is blessed with a wide range of traffic-free trails that vary in length and difficulty, ranging from the leisurely likes of the York to Selby track to the more challenging Tour of Malhamdale. We’ve summed up a few of our favourites to help you decide on the perfect bike ride during your time in Yorkshire!

Yorkshire’s Best Cycle Routes

#1 – The Coastal Rail Trail

Whitby Scarborough Rail Trail

The Scarborough to Whitby Railway Path is one of the best trails in the Moors. Stretching for 21 miles along the cliffs on an old railway line, it’s one for all of the family with its gentle climbs and no traffic. Plus it boasts some outstanding scenery, including views of the beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay.

#2 – A Ride Through the Solar System

York Selby Solar System

A relaxing countryside jaunt, the York to Selby cycle route is the perfect choice for a peaceful afternoon out on the bike. It’s mostly flat throughout, with some great views of the River Ouse and York Racecourse. There’s also a scale model of the solar system along the track, which is great fun for the kids.

#3 – Something for Everyone

Dalby Forest Difficult Bike Ride

Dalby Forest has plenty of trails to choose from: there’s one to suit every ability! From the easy rides alongside fields and the beck, to the moderate routes with mixed terrain, to the more extreme tracks with dirt jumps (strictly for experienced riders!), the 8,000 acre woodland offers something to everyone.

#4 – The Challenging Trip

Yorkshire Dales Bike Ride

A demanding and exciting route through the south of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Tour of Malhamdale has a mix of terrains from limestone to moor tops, and a fabulous flowing descent at the finish. The countryside in this area is simply stunning, so if you’re keen for a challenge and spectacular views, this is the trail for you.
