Have you been to York lately? On a recent visit there I was struck by how much the city has changed in the last decade, for the better. It still has that same irresistible charm – the quaint shops, cobbled streets and cosy pubs – but in recent times it’s also become a buzzing cosmopolitan city, the prefect choice for a luxury weekend break inYorkshire…
So, where to eat when you get here? I’ve cherry picked 5 of the best restaurants in York below to get you started…
5 of the Best Restaurants in York
1. Star Inn The City | Lendal Engine House | 01904 619 208
The latest venture of renowned and much-loved Yorkshire chef Andrew Pern. A stylish and chic little sister to the truly gorgeous Star Inn at Harome around 30 miles north. It’s in a great location, down by the river Ouse in the converted Old Engine House. The menu has retained much of the rustic charm of The Star Inn, with great care taken to use the freshest, local produce. And with a cheeky nod to the Yorkshire-man in charge, expect to be served your bread in a flat-cap.
2. Meltons Restaurant | 7 Scarcroft Road | 01904 634341
Somewhat off the radar as its location is outside of the main city centre, Meltons is well worth taking a short detour for. This fine dining restaurant has been around since the 1990s – testament to its popularity in the city. Owner and head chef Michael trained with Roux restaurants before returning to his native York to open Meltons.
3. The Blue Bicycle | 34 Fossgate | 01904 673 990
I just love this little restaurant. Lovely setting by the river on York’s Fossgate and a very cosy warm interior. Historically the building was apparently once used as brothel, something which explains the rather colourful images on the walls… The sea food and desserts are particularly delicious, but the whole menu is rather good.
4. Middlethorpe Hall| Bishopthorpe Road | 01904 641 241
Set on the outskirts of York this grand hotel and Spa is also home to one of the city’s best restaurants. This is a great option if you are looking for fine dining in a suitable grand setting. Dinner is served in the panelled dining rooms, giving the whole affair an air of opulent decadence. Excellent food and a lovely location.
5. Nineteen | Grape Lane | 01904 636 366
Set in York’s old quarter at the bottom of a pretty cobbled street, Nineteen is a perfect choice if you’re looking for decent food and a nice atmosphere in a central location. Chef Matt Beever has created a nice little menu with emphasis on fish and meat. It’s a lovely little restaurant and worth searching for when you’re next in York.
