5 reasons to fall in love with Foxglove Cottage

Foxglove Cottage

I recently paid a visit to Foxglove Cottage in the village of Hutton Buscel. This hidden gem of a place is surrounded by the North York Moors and just a few miles from the coast. You really do get the best of both worlds here with villages such as Thornton-Le-Dale and Hutton-Le-Hole within easy reach and the seaside delights of Scarborough just a short drive away.

Here are my top 5 reasons to  fall in love with Foxglove Cottage:

The stunning garden

Foxglove Cottage

Gardening has always been a passion for owner, Lynn de Bruyn and when she first purchased Foxglove Cottage she set about transforming the former farmyard into a stunning cottage garden. It’s divided into sections so there is lots for guests to explore along with plenty of seating options to just sit, relax and watch the world go by.

The garden will always be something of a work in progress for Lynn who scrutinises it every week to see what improvements or additions she can make. Different varieties of plants and flowers are regularly added so returning guests will always find new things to discover.

Lynn says:“I love to sit by the pond in the early evening which is very relaxing. The garden is a haven for wildlife so there are always a variety of birds and small animals such as hedgehogs to watch. I have even seen owls in the past which was pretty special”

Service with a smile

After spending many years living in America, Lynn has brought the USA’s high service standards to Foxglove Cottage. I really did get the impression that nothing is too much trouble for her in ensuring visitors to the cottage are delighted with their stay.

“I want to offer something different and special to guests so they feel completely at home and welcome at the property. Living next door means I am always on hand to provide help and advice to my guests if they want it on the best local places to visit and things to do on their stay.”

Arrive to some fresh eggs…

I was particularly impressed by the Welcome Hamper that guests receive at Foxglove Cottage which includes goodies such as fresh eggs, home-made cakes and jam. There will always be something to eat on your arrival – perfect after a long journey!

You can also arrange for a grocery delivery to be delivered on the day that you arrive which Lynn will very kindly unpack so it is ready and waiting for you.

Great for kids (and grown-ups!)

scarborough

Foxglove Cottage is just a few miles from Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast which makes it particularly popular with families – after all who doesn’t love a trip to the seaside! Children are made to feel especially welcome with little touches such as buckets and spades and books left on their beds. A playground is just a short walk away in the Village Hall and kids will also love the woodland walk at the end of the village where they can spot donkeys and alpacas.

The walk itself leads to the Downe Arms Pub and Wykeham Tea Rooms where the whole family can stop for a bit of light refreshment. Head a little bit further afield and The Anvil Inn at Sawdon is a great choice for some really good food.

Immaculate interiors and attention to detail

Foxglove Cottage

The cottage itself is immaculately presented with original artwork by local Yorkshire artists and furnishings gathered from travels round the UK, Europe and beyond– Lynn clearly has a great eye for interior design.

As a bit of a perfectionist she has shown great attention to detail throughout the cottage. Only the finest quality linens are used within the bedrooms and I particularly loved the feature mirrors, fireplaces and wooden beams.

Practical things have been thought of as well with torches in every room, an emergency bathroom kit (in case you have forgotten any essentials), a good selection of condiments in the kitchen and a hairdryer so you can leave yours at home and travel that bit lighter.

Walking in the Moors (and along the coast)

Lynn loves walking in the Moors and along the Yorkshire Coast and although the Moors can sometimes be overlooked for walkers in favour in the Dales, there are some really lovely walks here with lots of pretty villages along the way.  Ravenscar to Robin Hoods Bay is a particular favourite and well worth a try.

Forge Valley Woods is also just a 4-minute drive way and a great place to spend a day exploring. We recommend taking a wander by the stream, feeding the birds or just enjoying the bluebells and wild garlic.
