5 reasons to visit River View in Great Ayton

The handsome exterior of River View.

River View in Great Ayton is a very aptly named holiday cottage. With an elevated spot on Great Ayton’s lovely high street you can look out at the River Leven – it runs right through the village.

Explore the idyllic village of Great Ayton with its cafes, river, village green and pubs.

Here at Gorgeous Cottages we have always thought Great Ayton is one of Yorkshire’s prettiest villages. It’s no wonder owners Emma and Matt decided to transform this property (it used to be a solicitor’s office) into a beautiful holiday home in Great Ayton.

Here are some of our favourite things about River View:

#01 Watch the world go by

Take advantage of your position to enjoy lovely views over the river and village from the bench to the front of the cottage.

There’s something very relaxing about being near the river. Just listening to the flow of the water and watching the ducks can help stress melt away! That’s why I love the bench at the front of River View. You can sit with a cup of tea (or glass of wine) and watch the gentle pace of village life.

#02 Take a hike up Roseberry Topping

The walk up Roseberry Topping was recently named one of Britain’s Favourite Walks and the views from the summit are pretty spectacular. We particularly like that you can choose how challenging you want to go. A circular walk from Great Ayton to Roseberry Topping will take you about 5 hours and also takes in nearby Captain Cooks Monument.

You'll get great views walking up Roseberry Topping

For a shorter walk you can head to The Kings Head Inn (it’s at the base of the 1000-foot peak) and do the 30-minute climb to the top. You can reward yourself with a drink and bite to eat in the pub when you get back!

Stop at the Kings Head after climbing Roseberry Topping

There’s also gorgeous woods surrounding Roseberry Topping if you don’t feel up to the climb. Depending on the time of year you may see Spring bluebells or a riot of Autumn colours.

#03 Enjoy village life

Wander along for an ice-cream at Suggitts - said by some to be the very best in Yorkshire!

The village of Great Ayton is small but perfectly formed. As well as some lovely riverside walks there are a selection of shops and cafes to visit. Stokesley Butchers is a couple of doors down and Suggitt’s Ice Cream Shop a couple of doors up from River View, so you won’t have far to walk for some tasty treats.

A monument to Captain Cook in Great Ayton

Great Ayton was the childhood home of Captain Cook and the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum is located in the village. You’ll also find a monument on one of the village greens (Great Ayton has two – High Green and Low Green).

Great Ayton was the boyhood home of Captain James Cook and you can visit a museum about this famous historical figure just a few doors down.

There’s a couple of nice Bistro’s to try for food (Whinstone View and Joplins) along The Royal Oak which serves good pub grub!

#04 Dogs (and children) welcome!

Dog in North York Moors

River View is a dog-friendly holiday cottage in Great Ayton that allows up to two dogs. I like the fact that what looks like the front door leads you either down a passageway to the back yard or to the actual front door of the property.

If you're a keen walker, Great Ayton is renouned as a great base from which to strike out on foot, with some stunning walks just a few minutes away.

This means there’s no need to worry about muddy dogs – you can take them directly into the back yard where there is a handy hose!

Children are also more than welcome at this 2-bedroom cottage and a travel cot and high chair is available for babies and toddlers.

There's a handy utility in River View housing the washer/dryer.

There’s a handy utility room with both washing and drying machines which leads on to a downstairs cloakroom. Parents of small children will find this very useful indeed!

#05 Stylish surroundings (with original features)

The beautiful lounge features a painting of the stunning Roseberry Topping, a lovely walk you can do right from the doorstep.

Emma and Matt have completely renovated River View and there’s been great attention to detail throughout. I particularly love the original picture of Roseberry Topping that was specially painted for the cottage by local artist Shaun Richardson.

The open plan area downstairs is home to the kitchen, lounge and breakfast bar area.

The open plan living space is light and bright and everything is top quality including the stylish breakfast bar, wood flooring and handsome coffee table (made by Matt himself)! The kitchen is fully equipped too and has everything you could possibly need to create some dishes using some of the local Yorkshire produce you can purchase in and around Great Ayton.

Settle down to lunch. We recommend picking up one of Petch's famous pies from the village - yummy!

There are original features throughout – the snug and master bedroom both have original fireplaces as focal points and the exposed brick wall and beams in the second bedroom are a really nice touch.

The second bedroom is set on the second floor and boasts a stunning exposed brick wall.

The snug on the first landing is the perfect place for a peaceful afternoon catching up on some reading while the views from the top of the house are particularly lovely.

Make your way upstairs to find a snug on the first floor.

You can really take in the stunning surroundings of the North York Moors.

Gorgeous views down the village from the second floor.
