I’ve always had a soft spot for Goathland, the picture- postcard quintessentially Yorkshire village just a few miles inland from Whitby. This weekend I had the pleasure of introducing it to my kids with a stay at the charming Halmer Grange, a spacious and contemporary 4-bedroom holiday cottage set in the village…
5 Things to Love about Halmer Grange
#01 Bags of Space
This large Victorian building accommodates up to 8 people in 4 very spacious bedrooms. What’s more, every single room is en suite – a hugely important factor in booking a holiday cottage with a larger group. We found the rooms absolutely delightful, it was a real luxury to be able to spread out and enjoy this sense of space, with every room having its own TV and most with seating areas too. And wow gorgeous views from the bedrooms too.
#02 Breath-taking scenery on your doorstep
We were lucky enough to stay during a warm weekend in May, and the surrounding North York Moors countryside was simply sparkling in the sun. We took the opportunity to enjoy one of the many gorgeous walks from the doorstep, and made our way down into the woods to discover the famous Mallyan Spout waterfall. The landscapes here really magical, and walking along the river to neighbouring Beck Hole was just heavenly. We enjoyed a well-earned pint in the smallest pub in Yorkshire before heading back to Goathland on a gently inclining woodland trail.
#03 Excellent food just a stone’s throw away
Just across the road from Halmer Grange you have the luxury of dining out at the excellent Mallyan Spout Hotel which offers great pub food in the bar and finer dining in the restaurant. There’s also a lovely little coffee shop here which is perfect for that morning coffee. The hotel has a stunning garden so you can dine al fresco looking out over the North York Moors.
The village has several more good dining options and a handful of lovely little tea-rooms to try too.
#04 The North York Moors Railway
Goathland is on the main North York Moors Railway line, and the station here is like taking a step back in time. It’s been beautifully preserved and you can catch a traditional steam train from here to Whitby or Pickering experiencing stunning scenery en route.
#05 Famous TV & Film locations
As is fitting for such a beautiful village, Goathland has been the location for many famous TV & Film footage over the years. Most famously it was ‘Aidensfield’ in the much-loved TV series ‘Heart Beat’. You’ll still see the vintage police car parked in the village today. And fans of Harry Potter will recognise Goathland station as ‘Hogwarts’ station in the first movie.
Halmer Grange – Tell me more
