Whitby is one of those destinations that hold a special place in people’s hearts. It’s incredible how many speak fondly of childhood memories there, even those who live far away from this picturesque fishing town.
And this enduring love shows no sign of abating, with Whitby’s cobbled medieval streets home to thousands of tourists and day-trippers every week.
I had the pleasure of staying here recently at Spyglass 1708, a Gorgeous 2-bedroom holiday home set within an 18th Century former Sea Captain’s House.
Here’s why we loved this Yorkshire Coast Cottage and its location so much…
5 Things to Love about Spyglass 1708, Whitby
#01 A sense of place
From the nautical trinkets and gorgeous 3D globe to the stunning views of Whitby Abbey across the roof-tops, Spyglass 1708 gives you a fantastic sense of where you are. As the seagulls call overhead you are immersed in the sights and sounds of the seaside.
The apartment is also set down one of Whitby’s famous ‘yards’, a unique feature of the town Whitby’s narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby’s smugglers evade the Government revenue men and tax collectors.
#02 Heaven for kids
Whitby appeals to all ages and is particularly adored by children. The girls took full advantage of a warm September day by running in and out of the sea most of the morning.
Following that up with a Donkey ride, an ice-cream on the pier and a stick of rock to take home guaranteed 100% satisfaction – and not an iPad in sight. It’s heart-warming to see so many of the old traditions being kept alive in Whitby.
#03 Elegant interiors
With interiors by acclaimed Yorkshire designer Rachel McLane, we were not surprised to find the apartment a statement in stylish elegance. A contemporary palate of neutral browns and creams, the lighting in particular was perfectly pitched and the stunning en suite shower room a real joy to use.
#04 Foodie (and drinkie) delights
Whitby has seen something of a renaissance in the last decade in terms of food. Don’t worry, there are still plenty of old school fish ‘n chip restaurants including the excellent Magpie Cafe, but alongside the chippys you’ll find some excellent fine dining options. Greens of Whitby is an excellent award-winning seafood restaurant in the heart of town and The Marine Hotel also offers a good bistro-style menu.
And there are lots of gorgeous little cafes to scoff cake in too, including the divine Marie Antoinettes near Whitby Steps…
#05 The little things
Set over 3 floors, the accommodation in Spyglass has been well thought through. The upstairs bedroom comes complete with an en suite WC and a TV with integrated DVD Player. Settling the girls down to Frozen while you enjoy a glass of red with hubby downstairs is an under-stated pleasure! The open-plan kitchen / dining area was also a pleasure, that view across the rooftops as you settled down to breakfast each morning was heavenly.
