5 things to love about St Aidans Holiday Cottage
1. Contrasting old with new
What’s so striking about St Aidans holiday cottage is the juxtaposition of the church’s Gothic Revival architecture and its cutting-edge 21st Century extension. As you can imagine getting planning permission for such a radical combination took will, time and patience – so bravo to the owners for taking on the challenge. The resulting effect is most pleasing and gives the building a new lease of life. It also means that you can rustle up breakfast in a beautifully designed modern kitchen, bath in a contemporary bathroom and generally indulge in 21st Century comforts whilst still being surrounded by an historic building.
2. Historical Significance
I like my holiday cottages to have a little character and history, and St Aidans cottage near Helmsley has that in abundance. It was designed and built by Temple Lushington Moore (fabulous name!) who was something of a rock-star in the world of architecture in his day, with many beautiful buildings being created by him across the North York Moors. Commissioned by a legendary local Vicar, the final cost of the build was £532 – a bargain I say.
3. The perfect holiday cottage location?
Umm, yes! Within walking distance of Helmsley, one of the North York Moors prettiest market towns and just a short drive to some of the most stunning moorland scenery high up on Blakey Ridge, St Aidans is the perfect luxury cottage to take in the very best of Yorkshire. Other notable attractions nearby include Hutton-le-Hole, Castle Howard and the charming market town of Pickering.
4. Atmospheric living area
The main sitting room of St Aidans cottage is housed in the Church. What you fear might be cold and draughty is actually a cosy and intimate space, with a warm wood-burner giving off a soft glow and central heating throughout ensuring you are completely toasty. It’s a real pleasure just relaxing in this space, reading or catching up with a bit of TV, whilst above your head soars the colorful domed ceiling. The unique sitting room in this luxury Yorkshire Cottage offers even the most seasoned traveller something completely new…
5. Gorgeous Garden
And as if the interior wasn’t enough, St Aidans holiday cottage has a stunning outdoor area complete with stone patio, outdoor furniture and a feature heather garden. In the warmer months it’s a heavenly spot to dine, with only the clucking of the local chicken to disturb you.
