Crag Cottage is a handsome sandstone period cottage near Whitby which has recently been subject to an extensive refurbishment. It’s been transformed into a comfortable and elegant family holiday home sleeping up to 8 people comfortably.
We stayed here on a wintry weekend in November and, despite the weather doing its damndest outside, we enjoyed a gorgeous family break. There are many reasons why I think you’ll fall in love with Crag Cottage as we did, but here’s just 6 for starters….
6 Reasons to fall in love with Crag Cottage, Whitby
#01 Cosy, Cosy, Cosy!
Firing up the woodburner was top of our list of priorities as soon as we arrived. We really appreciated the fact that the fire was laid ready to light, so we were warming our hands by the glowing flames within minutes of stepping into the house. The fact that the wood burner is double sided made it even more pleasurable. We gathered around it in the kitchen with a glass of wine in hand, and later settled down to a movie in the sitting room with it crackling softly away in the background.
#02 3 Floors of Fun
Now I’m not saying you want to escape the kids completely on a family break, but a breather now and then is always good! My two loved exploring the various rooms on each floor and when they discovered the play room at the top of the house they were absolutely thrilled. Table football, lego, books, games, DVDs – so much to keep them entertained they didn’t want to leave…
#03 Peace and quiet
Considering you’re just a few minutes from central Whitby the gorgeous countryside setting comes as a nice surprise. You wake up to the sound of the local waterfall and birds singing outside – so nice when you’re looking for an escape from urban life. The beautiful large original windows act as the perfect frame for the lush Yorkshire countryside beyond.
#04 Wonderful Whitby
This much-loved seaside town is just 5 minutes drive from the cottage, or a very pleasant and relatively easy 45 minute walk along the river. Said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this gorgeously gothic medieval town packed with great bars, restaurants and independent shops; plenty to keep you entertained for a whole week. And Whitby is just the start of it – there are lots of other lovely little villages along this coast including Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay – all within easy reach of Crag Cottage.
#05 The little touches
Its clear the owners of Crag Cottage want to go that extra mile for their guests – a sure sign of a great holiday cottage. We arrived to fresh flowers and a well thought out welcome hamper with Prosecco and other treats. In the cupboards you’ll find pens and drawing books for younger children as well as plastic crockery for the little people. The kitchen cupboards are well stocked with all the eqipment you’ll need and in the utility there’s a BBQ and plenty of wood for your stay.
#06 Gorgeous gastro pubs in the Moors
As well as the delights of the Yorkshire coastline to explore from Crag Cottage, you are also perfectly positioned to discover the stunning North York Moors. Head up towards Pickering and take in the breath-taking scenery all around. Stop for a walk around the famous Hole of Horcum and enjoy Sunday lunch at one of the many great country pubs in the area. The Fox & Rabbit in Levisham (pictured above) is a particular favourite.
