6 reasons to love A Haven in Kirkbymoorside

The Haven

A Haven is just 1.5 miles from Kirkbymoorside but as you travel down the private farm roads you could be another world away.  The renovated barn is part of High Park Farm, a working arable farm and tranquil escape for anyone wanting a taster of rural life.

The beautifully rural setting of The Haven

Renovating the old barn into a beautiful holiday cottage was a real labour of love for owner Jane Harper – she not only managed the massive project herself but designed all the interiors, incorporating pieces from her travels in India and family pictures to give real personality to the project.

Here are the top 6 reasons why we have fallen in love with The Haven:

#01 The personal touch

Jane is an experienced host (she also looks after a B & B on the farm site) and really wants visitors to have a fabulous holiday at The Haven.  Little additional touches make all the difference and guests are very well looked after with fresh flowers, delicious baked brownies and a free maid service once or twice a week.

You can also take advantage of a full cooked breakfast (for an additional charge) – what better start to the day before heading out to explore the North York Moors. Jane says:

“I love having people stay and the additional services help to make sure that mums get a break too. They can have a day where the beds are made for them and the dishes tidied away – after all they are on holiday as well!”

#02 Expert hosts

Jane has lived in Yorkshire for the past 12 years (after returning with husband Philip who was born and bred in Ryedale) and is now an expert on both the area and local events.

Hutton Le Hole

The village of Hutton-le-Hole is home to the Ryedale Folk Museum

The best way to find out about Ryedale’s hidden gems is to ask a local and Jane will therefore meet guests whenever she is available and recommend anything from the best walks to try to nearby pubs and restaurants.

You can discover a variety of places to visit from Rievaulx Abbey to the Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole (which can be walked in under 2 hours from The Haven).

#03 The pretty town of Kirkbymoorside

The cobbled town of Kirkbymoorside may be small but has everything you could need during your stay with a great 6th generation butcher (we recommend the pies which are made fresh on-site everyday), a delicatessen stocking local products and a selection of cafes and pubs to choose from.

There is also a good choice of gift, antiques and homeware shops to explore and even a beauty -therapist if you fancy a little massage. We recommend paying a visit to the chemist – they are also wine connoisseurs with an extensive cellar of fine wines to choose from.

#04 The tranquil location

For me, the beautiful rural location really is the trump card of The Haven. Step outside and the only noise you can hear is the sound of the birds – a heavenly escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!

With no other buildings to disturb you, the views really do go on for miles and if you head out exploring keep your eyes peeled for a variety of birds along with deers, squirrels and pheasants.

#05 Fun for the family

There’s plenty to keep the family entertained at The Haven with a championship sized tennis court available on the grounds which also doubles up as a cricket pitch. A private lesson can be arranged if you see yourself as the next Andy Murray!

There is also a billiards room and croquet set available and little ones will love saying hello to Jane’s friendly ponies.  Head out of the farm and you can also try your hand at fishing or golf.

#05 Heaven for dogs!

Your four-legged friends will also be made very welcome at The Haven with lots of outside space for them (including a fully enclosed courtyard).

They will love a daily walk through the fields and there are a number of dog-friendly pubs in the area, including the Royal Oak at Gillamoor which has a special room for pets and is a pleasant stroll from the cottage.  The Penny Bank café in Kirkbymoorside is another great option where you can enjoy a cappuccino and cake without having to leave your dog behind.
