With miles upon miles of heather-clad moorland to explore, the North York Moors is a dream destination to visit with dogs. You’ll find gently flowing streams for muddy paws to paddle in, hills to climb with spectacular views from the top, characterful cottages dotted around pretty village greens and best of all lots of dog-friendly pubs to call at along the way.
So whether you fancy warming toes and paws by the fire, taking a breather with a refreshing drink or sitting down to a hearty bite, here are some of our favourite dog-friendly pubs to visit in the North York Moors. Eight dog-friendly pubs in the North York Moors
1. The Grapes at Slingsby
This dog-friendly pub in Slingsby dates back to Georgian times and has a lovely village location and lots of original features. Dogs will be made very welcome in the bar and snug and you’ll find live music pub quizzes and a brand new pizza oven.
Dogs are allowed in the snug and bar at The Grapes Inn Slingsby and there’s a lovely beer garden where you can enjoy alfresco food and drinks when the weather allows.

2. The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge
It’s hard to beat the stunning views from the 16th century Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge. It’s got a fabulously elevated position at the highest point of the North York Moors and we love the roaring open fires in this very dog-friendly Yorkshire pub.
The Lion Inn is located right in the centre of the North York Moors National Park so is a popular calling point for walkers with scenic routes to try including the Daffodil Walk through Farndale or following a disused railway lion to the pretty village of Rosedale.

3. The Crown Inn at Hutton-le-Hole
Hutton-le-Hole is a great choice for doggies. Take them round the dog-friendly Ryedale Folk Museum, go for a riverside walk in this pretty North York Moors village then round it off with a pint at the traditional Crown Inn Country Pub.
The pub is lovely and cosy with roaring open fires to keep you toasty and warm whatever the weather. Hutton-le-Hole famously has a stream running right through the middle of the village green so doggies can go for a quick paddle during your visit to one of Yorkshire’s prettiest villages.

4. The White Swan Inn, Pickering
A traditional 16th century coaching inn, this is a great choice for dog-friendly dining in Pickering. Dogs are made more than welcome in the bar and there are water bowls available so they can have a drink of their own.
You’ll find chunky stone walls, lots of nooks and crannies to huddle together in and a menu that’s full of home-cooked local seasonal produce. Dog-friendly things to do include exploring Pickering Castle and catching an NYMR steam train through the Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast.

5. The Plough Inn, Sleights
This dog-friendly pub has an enviable position in the Esk Valley. You can look out over the North York Moors (and maybe spot a steam train) while enjoying a drink with your doggie at your side. Friendly owners make everyone welcome and it’s just a couple of miles walk from Whitby.
There’s a lovely beer garden at The Plough Inn too, classic pub grub on the menu and local beers on tap including Black Sheep Ale.

6. The Horseshoe Inn, Levisham
You’ll find lots of locally-sourced ingredients and seasonal menus at this charming dog-friendly country pub in the pretty North York Moors village of Levisham. A sister pub, The Fox & Rabbit is just a few miles away in the equally lovely village of Lockton and you can take a scenic walk between the two.
Dark wood panelling and roaring open fires give lots of character and cosiness to the pub and the fresh meat and fish on the menu is all provided by local suppliers.

7. The Downe Arms, Wykenham
This traditional Yorkshire dog-friendly pub is on the cusp of the North York Moors National Park and just a few miles from the coast. Food choices range from sandwiches to locally reared Yorkshire steak.
Wykenham Forest is nearby where you can enjoy a number of woodland walking trails with four-legged friends and the pub lies around halfway between the North York Moors village of Thornton-le-Dale and Scarborough on the Yorkshire Coast.

8. The Durham Ox, Crayke
You’ll find lots of fresh local ingredients and special seasonal dishes at this renowned Yorkshire gastropub in the pretty (and historic) village of Crayke near Thirsk. Dogs are welcomed so it’s a great choice to spot for a bite to eat in this scenic part of Yorkshire.
The pub dates back more than 300 years and period features at the inn include exposed wooden beams, flagstone floors. Drinks on the menu range from local ales to gins and cocktails.
