The owners of Anvil Cottage fell in love with its rural setting as soon as they saw it. Andy and Lindsey Grant live right next door in the main farmhouse and decided to develop the holiday cottage so more people could enjoy the peace and quiet of this stunning part of the world.
Andy is a farrier by trade and as well as the name you’ll see nods to this throughout the cottage (as well as a selection of horses in the paddocks behind the farmhouse).
Here are just of the reasons to visit Anvil Cottage in Nidderdale:
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
You really can’t beat the beautiful setting in Nidderdale of Anvil Cottage – it’s absolutely gorgeous and a perfect place to recharge your batteries. The peaceful, rural location has stunning views of the surrounding area and is also just a few miles from Masham, Ripon and Swinton Estate so there’s plenty to do nearby.
It’s an elevated spot so you can see right out over the Dales and Moors – take a seat at the table and chairs in front of the property and just drink in this gorgeous view. Nidderdale is An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty after all.
A taste of country living
Andy trains his sheepdogs daily and it’s fascinating to see how these clever Border Collies round the sheep up by responding to various calls and whistles. The dogs (and Andy) compete at various sheepdog trials throughout the year and I think there could be some stars in the making. Especially as it’s rumoured the National Sheepdog Trials for 2018 will be held at Jervaulx Abbey!
There’s six acres of land surrounding Anvil Cottage and you’ll find stables, paddocks, sheep, dogs and 4 horses on the grounds at the back of the farmhouse – guests are even welcome to stable their own horse during a stay at Anvil Cottage.
You’ll find friendly chickens wandering free range and you may well see cows from nearby farms being herded up and down the lane. There’s also lots of sheep in the area (nearby Masham is well-known for it’s annual sheep fair) so lambing season is a great time to visit.
A warm welcome
It’s not just the chickens at Anvil Cottage who provide a warm welcome. You’ll arrive to 6 eggs (freshly laid by the farm’s chickens of course), bread, Yorkshire creamery butter, Rosebud jam (it’s made in nearby Masham and sold in Claridges no less) plus some delicious home-made cookies.
I particularly like the fact that guests have exclusive use of the land at the front while Lindsey and Andy use the land at the back of the property. They are on hand if you want to ask their advice on where to go but will leave you alone if you prefer.
It’s ideal that you can even arrange (at a small additional cost) for an evening meal to be cooked for you and left waiting in the fridge – ready to be heated up. It’s a great option for the first night and means you don’t have to think about rustling something up yourself and can spend the evening relaxing and discovering your surroundings.
Walk in the woods
There’s lots of great walking in the area including a circular walk from the door that will take you about an hour.
Hackfall Wood is just a couple of miles from the farm and well worth visiting. This beautiful spot was created in the 18th century by famous landscaper John Aislable (he was the man behind Studley Royal Gardens).
It’s home to ancient trees, follies, waterfalls and even a castle so it is no wonder that Dame Judy Dench proclaimed Hackfall her favourite woodland in the UK!
A sheep fair and a spa
You should also make time to head into nearby Masham. This lovely little town is home to four pubs and two breweries that you can tour (Theakstons and Black Sheep) so you certainly won’t be thirsty on a visit.
You’ll also find shops, galleries (take a look at The Nolon Stacey Fallery) and during the annual Masham Sheep Fair lots and lots of sheep! There’s lots of family entertainment (and sheepy fun) during this popular weekend at the end of September.
Anvil Cottage is also ideally placed for a trip to one of the finest spas in Yorkshire (we recently included it in our Top 10). The recently launched Swinton Country Club and Spa is nestled in 200 acres of the Swinton Estate grounds and the stunning facilities include an outdoor pool terrace, al fresco sauna and 18-metre indoor pool.
Also on the Swinton Estate is a rather gorgeous restaurant, a cooking school and even a Druid’s Temple.
Two beautiful bedrooms
Anvil Cottage works really well for families, couples or even a couple of couples. There’s a bedroom on the ground floor which is ideal for children or anyone with reduced mobility. The two queen-sized beds are a nice touch and it has a great en-suite.
Head upstairs though and you’ll find the real star of the show is the beautiful master bedroom. There’s so much space in here and the piece de resistance is a luxurious free-standing bath in the room. Just gorgeous!
