In this guest post, Jo Addison from Kiddieholidays, shares her tips on 5 fantastic days out for babies and toddlers in Yorkshire. Kiddieholidays (www.kiddieholidays.co.uk) provides inspiration and advice to parents going on holiday with babies and toddlers.
“Yorkshire is a fantastic place to go on holiday with a baby or toddler. There is so much to do and see including world class museums, long sandy beaches and loads of wide open spaces to run and around and explore. As this is my home county, I’ve spent a lot of time finding the best places to go with my 7 month old baby and 3 year old toddler. These are some of our favourite places…
Baby & Toddler-friendly Attractions Yorkshire
1. Eureka – National Children’s Museum
My 3 year olds favourite day out and one of the best bargains in Yorkshire! An annual pass at this fantastic museum costs just £10.95 for adults and £3.75 for babies aged 1-2. Toddlers will love running around and doing some shopping at the pretend M&S Simply Foods, doing some banking at the Halifax Bank or even sorting out letters at the Post Office.
Other highlights include filling the cars in the garage up with petrol and the interactive displays in the new All About Me area upstairs. You can take a picnic and eat in it inside in the dedicated picnic area or outside in the extensive grounds.
We usually grab some lunch at the Eureka cafe which is surprisingly nice, before we head off exploring again. There are loads of free events taking place at Eureka throughout the year as well, so it’s worth checking out the website before you visit to see what is going on. Parking is available at £3.00 for 4 hours so make sure you take some change.
2. National Railway Museum
This is a must for any young train fans. Situated in beautiful York, the NRM has over 1m objects from over 300 years of railway history. My 3 year loves running around climbing on the trains to see how they work and having lunch in the Railway carriage cafe. There are loads of free events which take place at the Railway Museum for families including interactive Storytelling events which are worth taking part in.Entry to the NRM is Free.
3. National Coal Mining Museum
This museum near Wakefield is fantastic for babies and toddlers whatever the weather. There are loads of interactive exhibitions about the history of mining, and an indoor soft play area called Little Diggers. This is based on an allotment theme and includes a ball pool, shed and slide – fantastic for rainy days.
On sunny days, little ones will enjoy the Nature Trail, Adventure Playground and visiting the pit ponies. The NCM is really baby friendly with dedicated parent and child parking, baby changing and is breast feeding friendly too. The NCM is free but donations are recommended.
4. Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Voted Yorkshire’s Most Magnificent Attraction, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a must for animal lovers. It is a Wildlife Park located just outside Doncaster, South Yorkshire where you can see lions, lemurs and giraffes just to name a few. There are loads of places to enjoy a picnic throughout the wildlife park or you can eat at one of the numerous cafes.
Adult tickets to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park are £14 and children 3-15 are £11.
You can’t visit Yorkshire without experiencing our beautiful coastline! Filey is a traditional seaside town with 5 miles of clean, sandy beaches for little ones to enjoy. My son loved splashing about in the sea and rock pools before looking for seals off Filey Brigg. Families can finish off a fantastic day at the coast with a well deserved ice cream and fish and chips overlooking the sea.
