Whether you choose a takeaway to eat from the paper or to sit down in a restaurant, you can’t beat the taste of fresh Yorkshire fish and chips. Here is the Gorgeous Cottages guide to 10 of the best places to get Fish and Chips in Yorkshire!
#01 The Magpie Café, Whitby
The Magpie Café in Whitby has a well-deserved reputation for fantastically fresh fish and seafood. Their fish and chips is one of the best around (with lots of variations to try on the menu) and the restaurant has stunning views of Whitby Harbour. Well worth the queues to get a table the next time you are in Whitby (or you could always get a takeaway instead).
#02 Scott’s of Helmsley
It’s up to you whether you eat in the restaurant or get a takeaway, but you’re guaranteed tasty fish and chips either way. Scott’s of Helmsley has received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence since 2012 and have restaurants in both Helmsley and York.
#03 Eskdale Fisheries, Sleights
A couple of miles from Whitby is the lovely village of Sleights in the Esk Valley. It’s a great location for a peaceful stroll and some tasty fish and chips from Eskdale Fisheries. It’s up to you whether you eat in or pick a spot outside to make the most of the North York Moors scenery.
#04 Fish Box, Robin Hoods Bay
You’ll get panoramic views from The Fish Box as it’s located on the cliff tops in the pretty fishing village, Robin Hoods Bay. There’s picnic tables outside so you can make the most of your position as you enjoy some tasty fish and chips!
#05 Miller’s Fish and Chips, Haxby
Miller’s won National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2018 so they must be doing something right. It’s a family business (now in the 4th generation) that’s been going for 75 years and is about 5 miles from York in the small town of Haxby. Specials on the menu include a Seafood Basket and Salt and Pepper Squid.
#06 Wetherby Whaler
This original Wetherby Whaler (in Wetherby naturally) has been around for almost 30 years. Since then the fish and chip business has expanded to 5 sites including Guiseley and York. The fish and chips is always made with Haddock (without skin or bone) and Maris Piper potatoes.
#07 Star Inn the Harbour, Whitby
The Star Inn the Harbour is the latest offering from Yorkshire restaurateur, Andrew Pern. Their fish and chips (either cod or haddock) is made using gluten free batter. Apparently it is even tastier than the standard version. The distinctive octagonal building is opposite Whitby Station and they also have some fantastic Sundaes (so try and leave a bit of room).
#08 The Wensleydale Heifer
The Wensleydale Heifer is located in the pretty village of West Witton. This Yorkshire Dales eatery is renowned for delicious fish and chips which are made using a Black Sheep batter and served with posh peas and triple cooked fat chips.
#09 Quayside, Whitby
Another Whitby classic, Quayside in Whitby was named National Fish and Chip Shop of the year in 2014 and serves proper Yorkshire fish and chips (cooked in beef dripping) with portion sizes to match. It’s handily located on Pier Road so you can grab a bench by the sea if you are getting a takeaway.
#10 Big Catch, Ilkley
You’ll find Big Catch located in the lovely Victorian spa town of Ilkley. It’s a family owned Yorkshire fish and chip shop whose mission is to provide tasty fish and chips with a smile. I think that sounds like the perfect combination to me.
