Laykin is one of those holiday cottages which just embody everything Gorgeous Cottages stands for.
It’s deeply entwined with the Yorkshire landscape, standing proudly on a hillside overlooking the famous meadows of Swaledale. And with its beautiful interiors and amazing views, it’s definitely one of our favourite holiday homes. We can think of lots of reasons why we love it, but here are five for starters…
1. A room with a view
You know the view is going to be good before you actually reach Laykin. The journey there will take you up a dramatic private road with a rather exciting hair-pin bend, and the angle of the road gives you some indication of how much height you are gaining over a short period. And once you arrive you can park up and stare dreamily out at the tiny stone barns and criss-cross stone walls peppering the lush green fields below; the view is just as good from the inside. In fact, I think you would be hard pushed to find a toilet with a better view than Laykin.
2. The Punch Bowl Inn
If you’re a bit of a foodie, you can delight in the fact that one of Yorkshire’s finest gastropubs is within walking distance of the cottage. The excellent Punch Bowl Inn has become something of a Yorkshire institution. Make your way down there for Sunday lunch and walk it off strolling back up to the cottage.
3. Quality at every turn
From the minute you walk through the door you will sense this is a house much loved by its owners. Everything from the fixtures and fittings to the furnishings and bed linen is of top quality. And with it’s muted natural colours, it fits perfectly into its rural home.
4. The great outdoors
You are surrounded by nature at Laykin and if you sit contently on the terrace for any length of time you’re likely to spot a host of local wildlife. And if you’re into walking or cycling, then this is heaven. Strike out from the doorstep and enjoy some of the best walking in the UK, or hop on the bike and follow the Tour De France route which runs along directly below you.
5. A home from home
There are lots of little touches in Laykin which really do make it feel like a home such as the gorgeous farmhouse kitchen where you’ll find condiments and spices in the cupboards, to the cosy sitting room with its open firewood burning stove.
