Five reasons to visit Old Cartmel Cottage in Middleham

Old Cartmel Cottage

Old Cartmel Cottage has everything you need for a little getaway. Completely renovated last year by owner Angela Stephenson, her care and attention to detail is evident throughout the rooms.

This bijou space is perfectly formed with a fully-equipped kitchen, cosy living space and comfortable bedroom. The bathroom has a powerful monsoon shower (great for waking up in the morning) while underfloor heating and a roaring fire will ensure you are always warm inside the cottage.

1. The attention to detail

It was really clear during my visit that Angela wants her guests to have a great time at Old Cartmel Cottage so has created her ideal of the perfect holiday home.

From the lovely hamper on arrival (full of local treats) to a hand-written welcome note, you will be made to feel at home from the moment you step inside. You’ll find a selection of local interest books, paperbacks, board games and even a pair of binoculars in the cottage!

Angela has also prepared all the information you could need for your visit from the best local walks to places to eat and as a local (living just 4 miles away in Coverham), she prepares the cottage herself to ensure it meets her very high standards:

“I’m a bit of a perfectionist and like to get everything just right for my guests. I also love this area so want to make sure visitors make the most of it by having all the information they could need.”

2. Spend a cosy night in or choose your pub!

Old Cartmel Cottage is the perfect place to spend a cosy night together in front of the fire with a bottle of wine; the village store has an excellent selection once you have finished the provisions in the welcome hamper.

However, if you do fancy heading outside, the cottage is located in the heart of Middleham with a choice of four pubs in the village that all offer food. Venture a little further away to Leyburn and you’ll find a selection of cafes and pubs while the Blue Lion at nearby East Witton is also an excellent gastropub.

3. Watch the racehorses

Did you know that Middleham has a population of around 800 people and 500 racehorses? Numerous racing stables are hidden away throughout the village. On any given day you’ll see the horses being walked through the village on their way to training in the Dales.

For any racing fans it is the perfect chance to see these magnificent animals up close. Head out to the Dales (literally just outside the village) and you can even watch them on the gallops. Once a year on Good Friday the stables are opened to the public which is a great opportunity for a nose around!

4. The lovely location of Middleham

Middleham made our list of the top 10 prettiest villages in Yorkshire and it is easy to see why. The place is full of lovely buildings and also has a couple of tearooms and antique shops to visit. It’s most famous, however, for Middleham Castle which was once home to Richard III – you can still visit the remains of it today.

Head a couple of miles out in one direction and you’ll get to Forbidden Corner which is full of pretty gardens and curiosities. It’s worth a visit and definitely not just for children! Leyburn is just a few miles the other way and has a great selection of independent shops to browse.

5. A walk in the Dales

The location of Middleham means you can easily reach both Wensleydale and Coverdale, making it a great location for anyone who loves the Dales. There are some lovely walks that you can take from the village and you can also simply just head to the top of Middleham to enjoy some pretty spectacular views.

You’ll find details of some walks to try in Old Cartmel Cottage so bring along your walking shoes and getting out exploring! After all, you can always reward yourself with a drink in one of the pubs afterwards.
