Five things to love about Bramble Bottom holiday cottages

Five things to love about Bramble Bottom

Suzanne and Chris have been Gorgeous Owners almost since we launched the website a few years ago. Their fabulous romantic cottages have been firm favourites with our guests ever since, scoring an incredible amount of 10/10s on their reviews.

So it was with great excitement that we learned a number of years ago that Suzanne and Chris were working on another project, this time on a much larger scale.

And that project was Bramble Bottom, a grand and gorgeous period building which sits in the heart of picture-postcard Muker in Swaledale. Over the course of two and a half years, they set about transforming what was a tired and dark interior into a stunning five-bedroom luxury holiday cottage, and we were just thrilled when they invited us to come and try it out.

We loved everything from the Swaledale themed rooms to the sense of quality at every turn. So here are just five of the things you will love about Bramble Bottom…

Five things to love about Bramble Bottom

1. A room with a view

Bramble Bottom Muker

Have you been to Swaledale before? If you haven’t then now is the time to put this on your bucket list. For those in the know, you’ll understand what I mean when I say there are few finer sights in the world than this dramatic and intensely vivid landscape. As we sat down to breakfast in Bramble Bottom we looked directly onto the River Swale and the Dale beyond, and it was simply magnificent.

2. Simple pleasures

Bramble Bottom

As any clued up parent knows it’s bordering on recklessness to come away for a break with the kids and not pack an iPad or two. We packed it, but it stayed put in the bag. Instead, out came the wellies and off we went to splash about together in the river. Simple pleasures indeed and a memory the kids will cherish forever. There was lots more to do close by too including waterfall hunting and even meeting the resident alpacas at the fantastic Hazel Brow farm.

3. The luxury of space

Bramble Bottom Muker

Bramble Bottom has a really quirky layout, with the huge open-plan living space at the top of the house and the bedrooms set either side. We loved the fact that ten people could happily share this house without ever feeling like they were getting on top of one another. We mused one evening that the ‘West Wing’ would be perfect for grandparents wanting some peace and quiet while the ‘East Wing’ is ideal for families with younger children. A room to please everyone, and with four bathrooms in the house (three of which are en-suite) there won’t be a morning queue.

4. The Farmers Arms

Farmers Arms Muker

If I could magic up a village pub just around the corner from my home, then it would be something like The Farmers Arms. This wonderful pub is a real hub of the community with its glowing open fire and hearty pub grub. We had every intention of cooking at least one of the nights, but we were enjoying the food here so much we ended up eating out every night. But as it’s literally a stone’s throw away, you’ll find it hard to resist too!

5. Location, location, location

Swaledale

Muker is a truly stunning little village and it has so much more to it than first meets the eye. Not only is the riverside location idyllic but the village itself has a great pub (as above), a charming tea room, a woollen shop and even an art gallery and craft shop. I can’t think of any other boxes I want to tick when staying in a Yorkshire Dales village. And just beyond you have the incredible countryside of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. I would also highly recommend a drive up and around the Dales Trail here taking you through a land of fast flowing rivers, waterfalls and high summits where old Viking names like Keld and Thwaite add to the sense of a land steeped in history and legend.
