Nell Tom is a magnificent four-bedroom luxury holiday cottage set high on a hillside in glorious Swaledale.
I had the pleasure of staying there recently and was lucky enough to experience it during a record-breaking heatwave in November. I can’t promise you the same for every autumnal visit, but I can promise you will fall in love with the place. Here’s why…
1. The epic landscape

We felt truly humbled by the scale of the surrounding countryside. Set into the hillside and with uninterrupted views, you can see for miles down the Dale. We loved waking up and watching the mist lifting off the River Swale far below. There are few holiday cottages which command such an exceptional view of Yorkshire.
Just a short drive away at nearby Reeth you can walk right down to the river and across a swing bridge to the other side, giving you a different but equally breathtaking perspective of the Dale.
2. Every little detail

It is obvious from the outset that the owners of Nell Tom care enormously about your stay and have tried to do everything they can to make you feel at home. From the gorgeous welcome hamper filled with Wensleydale cheese, chutneys and bread to the walking guides, magazines and books provided for you to browse. And the finishing touch was definitely torches in almost every bedroom – fantastic!
3. Perfect for kids

I stayed with my four and six-year-old girls and found it to be the ideal house for families for so many reasons. The house is huge so everyone can enjoy their own space; the kids particularly loved having their own snug / TV room while we lit up the wood burner and settled down in the sitting room. In the evening we all perched on the kitchen stools and enjoyed Strictly together. And if you’re worried about not having enough for them to do – don’t be! A walk over the brook and across the hills spotting sheep and rabbits had them captivated for hours.
4. A knock-out pub

The Punch Bowl is one of Yorkshire’s best-known inns and is within walking distance of Nell Tom. We ate there twice, and both times the food was superb. It has a lovely welcoming atmosphere, the perfect local in fact. The friendly staff were the icing on the cake, with one of them offering to drive us back up the hill that evening.
5. Immaculate interiors

The house is a perfect mix of contemporary and traditional, with tartan fabrics and neutral tones combining to create a peaceful and relaxing ambience. Subject to a refurbishment the property was completed gutted and renovated to five-star standard, and the quality of all the fixtures and fittings are absolutely top notch.
