Farndale is one of those secret hidden valleys in the North York Moors National Park which sweeps away from the high moorland on top of Blakey Ridge and runs all the way down to the river Dove at its bottom.
It is staggeringly beautiful.
We had the pleasure of staying in the heart of this magical landscape at West View Cottage, a handsome traditional farmhouse which has been transformed into one of Yorkshire’s most exclusive holiday cottages. Here’s why we fell in love with this beautiful holiday home.
1. The Daffodil Walk
Said to have been planted by monks many hundreds of years ago, every spring thousands of beautiful daffodils start to bloom along the banks of the River Dove. This very pretty and quite famous walk starts just a few hundred yards from the cottage door and is the perfect tonic for those craving the sights and sounds of nature. Start off with a cup of tea and slice of cake from the Daffy Café at the beginning of the route, smug in the knowledge that you’re about to walk it all off. 2. Exceptional quality
As soon as you walk through the door of West View Cottage you get an immediate sense of the quality of this award-winning restoration. Chunky walls, solid stone and oak floors (heated of course) and a fully stocked kitchen complete with a welcome hamper filled with tasty goodies. And the bathrooms are a delight too. Open the window and sink down for a long hot soak while listening to the early evening birdsong all around you.
3. A warm welcome at the local inn
Everyone loves a pub within walking distance of their holiday cottage, and West View has one just a stone’s throw away – The Feversham Arms. We spent time in here every single day and enjoyed warming ourselves by the roaring open fire. The pub serves decent pub grub, and the landlord’s poodles were a huge hit with the kids too!
4. The wildlife
Tucked well away from main roads and other human distractions, West View Cottage is surrounded by an abundance of local wildlife. Pheasants and other games birds wander around happily while swallows dip and dive overhead. Skylarks are common in the moors and if you’re lucky, you may also spot the wild deer prancing across the fields at dusk.
5. Foodie fun
There are lots of great dining pubs and restaurants within easy reach of West View Cottage: The Crown at Hutton-le-Hole, The Oak Gillamoor, The White Horse Farm Inn in Rosedale to name but a few. While we were there we indulged in a long boozy lunch at the Michelin-starred Star Inn in Harome, just half an hour from the cottage. There are also lots more great restaurants and upmarket delis in the market town of Helmsley nearby.
