Six things to love about The Ranch holiday cottages

Six things to love about The Ranch

Elianne 01 March 2017

We had the luxury of spending February half term at the fabulous Ranch in Gilling West. It was the perfect opportunity to introduce my Northern Irish father and brother to the stunning landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales.

There were five adults and five children in total, but it felt like we had room for more in this gorgeous large luxury house. Here’s just a few of the reasons why we thought it was the perfect family holiday home.

Six things to love about The Ranch

The Ranch living room

1. The sense of space

This is a big old barn. There are five bedrooms in total but it sleeps 12 people comfortably with one large bedroom sleeping up to four adults. And the living areas are equally impressive. The generous living room offers plenty of room for the whole family to stretch out and enjoy, and with the fire roaring it's a lovely spot to catch up over a glass of wine or two. And at night when the kids went to bed we all enjoyed a dip in the hot tub.

2. Location, location!

The Ranch is set within the grounds of a private estate, tucked in behind the beautiful Georgian village of Gilling West. Wake up each morning and throw open your curtains to enjoy the views. It’s so peaceful here and the local walks are a delight, particularly with ducks and swans to entertain little ones. For more serious hiking, Gilling West is well known as a popular starting point for longer walks in the Dales.

3. Excellent local pubs

There are two pubs in the village within easy walking distance to The Ranch. The first is a traditional option, perfect for pub grub and a pint of local ale. The second is a fantastic gastropub which serves the very best local produce; you’ll find warm friendly faces in both.

4. Richmond on your doorstep

The pretty Georgian market town of Richmond is another firm favourite with tourists and its not hard to see why. The charming cobbled square is surrounded by local shops, cafes and pubs with something for everyone. Richmond Castle is well worth a visit and we recommend the riverside walk from the station to Easby Abbey for beautiful views.

5. Stunning Swaledale

Just beyond Richmond the countryside opens up to the dramatic landscapes of Swaledale, one of the most beautiful parts of the Yorkshire Dales. Take the road up to Muker, following the trail of the Tour de France and go for a walk among the wild meadows by the river Swale. Kids will love splashing about in the shallow parts of the river in their wellies. Stop for lunch at the Punch Bowl in Low Row, another excellent gastropub with fabulous views.

6. Plenty of options for eats

We discovered a fantastic French restaurant in Richmond during our stay called Rustique. It’s tucked away down an alleyway and offers a fantastic French- style menu in a very atmospheric setting. We also tried the local Italian La Piazza which was perfect for families and the food was superb.

The Ranch – tell me more
