I had never heard of the term hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) until a couple of months ago and it now seems to be everywhere. If you are unfamiliar with this Danish word, it is all about creating the right ambience in your home so that it is cosy, warm and inviting.

With the weather getting colder and winter well and truly on its way I think we could all do with a little hygge in our lives. With this in mind, here are eight cottages we think have mastered the cosy and warm vibe.
1. Underbargh Cottage

This pretty country cottage for two is nestled in the peaceful village of Stainforth on the south-eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Enjoy a gorgeous countryside walk to nearby Stainforth Force before cuddling up on the plush sofa in front of the cottage's wood-burning fire. French country-chic furniture gives elegance to Underbargh Cottage while perfectly placed soft furnishings add lots of hygge cosiness.
2. Emerald's Barn
Light up the wood-burning fire at this cosy cottage for two. The 19th century barn has a beautiful location in open countryside near York and is just right for a grown-up country retreat.

3. Laykin Cottage

What could be nicer than waking up in this comfortable bed to stunning views of Swaledale? The only thing to add is breakfast in bed – what could be more comforting than that!
4. Wren

This charming one-bedroom cottage has everything you need for a cosy break in the country. Sit back and relax with a good book and then explore your pretty village location complete with riverside walk, village green and a lovely local pub.
5. Rosemary Cottage

This cottage really does hit the spot when it comes to having Hygge. Beautiful inside and out, Rosemary Cottage is the perfect country retreat. Curl up on the comfortable sofa, wrap yourself in a throw and watch a good movie – what more could you want?
6. The Potting Shed

The perfect place to get away for some rest and relaxation with a loved one. Not only have the owners thought of everything you might need, but they will be on hand to give you a warm welcome!
7. Wykewood

I think this living room perfectly sums up the concept of hygge and manages to be both contemporary and cosy. Wykewood has been stunningly renovated with great attention to detail and there is even a sumptuous Balinese-style wood-fired hot tub in the garden.
