Cosy and warm

Cosy and warm 'hygge' cottages for winter

Elianne 28 October 2016

I had never heard of the term hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) until a couple of months ago and it now seems to be everywhere. If you are unfamiliar with this Danish word, it is all about creating the right ambience in your home so that it is cosy, warm and inviting.

Nurse Cherry Cottage

With the weather getting colder and winter well and truly on its way I think we could all do with a little hygge in our lives. With this in mind, here are eight cottages we think have mastered the cosy and warm vibe.

1. Barley Cottage

Barley Cottage

Barley Cottage has got ‘warm and inviting’ down to a T. Sink into a leather chair and curl up by the fire with a good book. The location is idyllic and if you can bear to tear yourself away from the cottage there is a super 17th century village pub just down the road.

2. Burtersett Cottage

Burtersett Cottage

From its position in a sleepy Wensleydale village you can look out over the Dales while warming yourself by the fire. The fireplace is original as is the stone floor, while the rug and cushions add warmth and cosiness.

3. Emerald's Barn

Light up the wood-burning fire at this cosy cottage for two. The 19th century barn has a beautiful location in open countryside near York and is just right for a grown-up country retreat.

4. Laykin Cottage

Laykin Cottage

What could be nicer than waking up in this comfortable bed to stunning views of Swaledale? The only thing to add is breakfast in bed – what could be more comforting than that!

5. Miller’s Croft

Millers Croft, Little Crakehall

This charming one-bedroom cottage has everything you need for a cosy break in the country. Sit back and relax with a good book and then explore your pretty village location complete with riverside walk, village green and a lovely local pub.

6. Rosemary Cottage

Rosemary Cottage

This cottage really does hit the spot when it comes to having Hygge. Beautiful inside and out, Rosemary Cottage is the perfect country retreat. Curl up on the comfortable sofa, wrap yourself in a throw and watch a good movie – what more could you want?

7. The Potting Shed

The Potting Shed

The perfect place to get away for some rest and relaxation with a loved one. Not only have the owners thought of everything you might need, but they will be on hand to give you a warm welcome!

8. Wykewood

Wykewood 2

I think this living room perfectly sums up the concept of hygge and manages to be both contemporary and cosy. Wykewood has been stunningly renovated with great attention to detail and there is even a sumptuous Balinese-style wood-fired hot tub in the garden.
