Vale View is a beautiful holiday cottage which sits at the top of Robin Hood's Bay on the Yorkshire Coast. Owners Jo and Gary Mason took their love of holidaying here to the next level by creating their very own luxury holiday home by the sea.
Vale View Cottage – The Masons tell their story
So how did you get into the holiday cottage industry?
“It was really the classic thought, if you can’t find a solution then do it yourself! After several years of booking cottages and being disappointed on arrival with the quality of contents and cleanliness, we looked into purchasing our own holiday home for ourselves to avoid further disappointment. And once we had created this beautiful house, we thought it would be a shame for others not to enjoy it too!”
What made you choose this particular cottage and this location?
“As Jo spent her childhood growing up in the area, we often come back for holidays. Like thousands of others, we were hooked on the magic of Robin Hood's Bay from the start. With Vale View being slightly out of Robin Hood's Bay, but close enough to walk into, we feel it provides the best of both worlds. Peace and tranquillity from the hustle and bustle of Robin Hood's Bay during the main holiday season and yet within easy reach to wander down into when you like. Plus you’ll always get a parking spot which is like gold dust in the village!”
What work did you have to do to the holiday cottage?
“When we purchased Vale View we called it the Ugly Duckling, but the potential was clear. Year 1 we spent renovating the outside with a new roof and repainting the dull grey rendering with a seaside themed cream and blue.
In Year 2 the inside was completely redesigned and redecorated whilst maintaining original features. New oak floors were laid downstairs and upstairs new carpets were fitted. We added an en-suite to the master bedroom and converted the old bathroom into a family shower room. The lean-to on the side was re-roofed and insulated and converted into the current boot/utility room. We now feel we have created an elegant swan out of that initial ugly duckling!”
What are the highs and lows of owning a luxury holiday cottage?
“The highs are seeing people walk in and go wow, and knowing they are enjoying a home-from-home holiday experience because of all our hard work. We haven’t had any lows yet, and long may that continue!”
Any fascinating or interesting facts about the cottage?
“Vale View in times gone by used to be the village butchers, as can be seen by the original old cast iron oven in the kitchen and the large shop front window in the dining room.”
What would be your advice to anyone looking to buy a luxury holiday cottage?
“Do your research and purchase a property in a well-known all-year-round sought after holiday location. Think carefully about your redecoration ensuring continuity and light in your design. Make sure you provide everything that you would expect if you were renting it.
Research and find local companies you are happy with to look after and maintain your property checking on the standard of cleaning etc. for yourselves before beginning to rent out. Try and find something that sets yours apart from others.”
