Yorkshire is the UK’s largest playground, brimming with a huge array of activities to keep the kids occupied. But did you know there’s an abundance of things for grown-ups, too? Whether you’ve managed to steal a weekend away with your loved one or you’re popping over with a friend, there’s plenty to see and do.

We’ve summed up five of our favourite activities for couples, from the bustling spots ideal for a shopping spree to peaceful places that are perfect for picnics. There are plenty of things for couples in Yorkshire and if you fancy making a weekend of it some very romantic holiday cottages too!

Five things for couples in Yorkshire

1. Beside the seaside

Yorkshire’s 45-mile stretch of coastline blends quaint fishing villages, picturesque maritime towns and traditional seaside resorts upon a stunning backdrop of the North York Moors and Wolds. For a vintage seaside experience, head to Scarborough where you’ll find sandy beaches, rock shops and donkey rides, not to mention excellent fish and chips! Travel 20 miles north and you’ll discover Whitby’s charming maze of streets, lined by an eclectic mix of shabby chic stores, jet jewellers and award-winning seafood restaurants. For a peaceful walk along the coast, opt for Flamborough Head or Bridlington’s south beach, where you can stroll for miles before settling down for a picnic by the sea.

Where to stay: The Bull Pen is an exquisite couples retreat in nearby Goathland.

2. Marvellous market towns

Malton Market, the heart of the local community

For a serving of small-town charm infused with cosmopolitan accents, choose one of Yorkshire’s market towns for your grown-up day out. The gem of East Yorkshire, Beverley flaunts an impeccable combination of tradition and modernity; cobbles, courtyards and a breathtaking minster are contrasted by contemporary restaurants and delightful boutiques. Over in Malton, local produce reigns supreme, and teamed with its friendly, bustling atmosphere, it’s the perfect destination for a couple of foodies who want a lively day out.

3. Adrenaline junkie adventures

Yorkshire offers a lot to couples that fancy something a little more extreme. Its coastline, rivers and canals make it paradise for fans of water sports, while crags such as those at Malham and Brimham mean it’s a haven for climbers. There are also opportunities to take to the air all over the county, so whether you fancy a flying lesson, a paragliding session or a skydive from 5000 feet, Yorkshire has the perfect activity for you and your partner. Of course, if only one of you is an adventurer, there are plenty of pubs and tea shops to relax in while the other gets an adrenalin fix!

4. City jaunts

Trinity Leeds

Trinity Leeds, the UK’s latest shopping centre

While it’s most famous for its stunning rural landscape, there’s more to Yorkshire than rolling hills and pastoral villages. The county’s cities and large towns are fantastic destinations for couples, all boasting their own distinct character and a host of top-class amenities. Head to York for cobblestoned streets, river views and dozens of delightful tearooms to punctuate your day out, while a trip to Leeds is ideal if you’re planning on a shopping spree and lots of tasty cocktails! Harrogate is the best choice for those wanting a more up-market experience; the spa town features an array of antique shops, jewellers and fashion boutiques, as well some gorgeous gardens and parks.

5. Food for thought

Everyone knows that Yorkshire has an impressive larder, and a visit isn’t complete without sampling some of its tasty local produce. The county now boasts the most Michelin-starred restaurants outside of London and regularly plays host to food markets and festivals. There are hundreds of quality country pubs, sweet tea rooms and fabulous restaurants, not to mention the array of farm shops and delis that continue to spring up throughout. A couple’s day out isn’t complete without some tasty treats, so be sure to visit one of Yorkshire’s fantastic eateries. After all, the best way to someone’s heart is through their stomach!

In Yorkshire, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a place to visit during a romantic weekend or another venture to add to your action-packed break, you’re sure to find it in God’s Own County.
