Behind every Gorgeous Cottage, there’s an owner with a story to tell. Getting to know our owners and finding out more about their properties is just one of the reasons why we love what we do!
This week we had the pleasure of catching up with Catherine & Piers Turner, owners of Grace View Cottage, a dog-friendly one-bedroom property that looks out over the Cleveland Hills.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves
Piers and I have been together for 14 years and when we met, we both had very different lives to what we live today. Piers ran his own print business and I worked in corporate sales as a change management consultant based in London.
I had been studying and teaching Natural Horsemanship alongside my corporate job, but I had a deep desire for a more fulfilling life. The timing seemed perfect as Piers had just sold his business so we set out to find a farm.
We searched and searched but nothing seemed to tick all of our boxes until we heard about a dilapidated farm that was not really even for sale at the time. When we came to see “the plot” we both immediately fell in love. We are both outdoor people and we were blown away with the 360-degree views that the land offered.
How did you go about refurbishing / decorating the properties?
Long story short, we bought the land, moved on site (living in caravans) with our 6-month-old baby and started to build our dream home and a small facility to keep horses.
The original architect plans for our home were passed with much larger square footage, so when we decided to reduce the house size, we were left with a footprint for planning permission of an extra annexe. We decided to build a cottage so that other people could visit and experience the peace and well-being that the stunning countryside views afforded.
What do you feel draws visitors to this part of Yorkshire?
At the time, living on a building site in a caravan with a small baby was hard, but what kept us going was the breathtaking views that surrounded our farm. This, for me, is what makes Grace View Cottage and our location here in Yorkshire so special. It also boasts the most amazing sunsets here with big skies all around.
What makes Grace View Cottage stand out?
We wanted a luxurious, spacious and relaxing property, where couples' stress might melt away and they could simply enjoy the outdoors.
Bi-fold doors mean guests can look out over Roseberry Topping from the comfort of their lounge and we have also included a fully stocked home bar, a luxurious super-king bed and a huge private garden.
I think what makes Grace View Cottage so unique is the additional services we offer: you can bring your dogs and horse on holiday; take part in a guided mountain bike adventure with Piers; experience a meditation workshop with horses; practise yoga on the lawn, or even indulge in a spa day with a Tutti Organics Treatment.
Do you have any tips to ensure consistent bookings all year round?
As a new venture, we really wanted the cottage to be a success, so we sought the advice of Gorgeous Cottages to find out what visitors would really appreciate from a holiday in North Yorkshire. Dog-friendly, luxurious touches and hot tubs featured highly so that’s exactly what we created.
What would you say is the most rewarding part of holiday letting?
Grace View Cottage is a perfect retreat, whatever the weather. It’s the ideal staycation for relaxing, unwinding and recharging the batteries and we often receive lovely cards and presents from our guests telling us how much they loved it!
What advice would you give to other new owners?
Do your own research, but take on advice from the experts in terms of what really maximizes your occupancy.
When did your property first launch with Gorgeous Cottages, part of The Travel Chapter?
We first met with Gorgeous Cottages in 2018, and finally launched Grace View Cottage in spring of this year. I have been blown away by the number of bookings since launch – we’re almost fully booked until October!
What attracted you to The Travel Chapter’s Gorgeous Cottages brand?
We approached Gorgeous Cottages as the regional experts in luxury self-catering letting and were really pleased with the advice we received.
