We are delighted to have grabbed a few minutes with man of the moment Gary Verity, Welcome to Yorkshire’s CEO and the man heralded as bringing the Tour de France to Yorkshire.
Gary and his dedicated team did a truly fantastic job over the months leading up to the Tour and delivered what has been described as the ‘Grandest Grand Depart’ ever.
We ask him what it is about Yorkshire which drives him to such success…
Gorgeous Cottages talk to Gary Verity
Go on, where’s your favourite place in Yorkshire?
I’m often asked where my favourite places are in Yorkshire and the genuine answer is it’s impossible to say because we’re blessed with so much variety right on our doorstep.
The North York Moors are nothing short of breathtaking, the Yorkshire Dales are like a living work of art, our coastline is the envy of many counties and then we have the superbly dramatic Pennines, the stunning Peak District and the Yorkshire Wolds – which are so inspiring that artists like David Hockney committed them to canvas.
What is it about Yorkshire which is so inspiring?
It’s hard to know when to stop listing awesome things about our county, its people and our world-shaping history. And I could go on for days about our county’s natural beauty.
Yorkshire is fast becoming a cultural hotbed and is described in some quarters as the European Capital of Sculpture, with plenty of free places to see amazing art. We’re contemporary and cool too, with seven cities and countless towns boasting some incredible shopping, nightlife, dining and drinks. Leeds, York, Sheffield, Bradford to name just some of our cities have ever growing fashion, dining, nightlife and cultural scenes.
Speaking of which, our maritime city of Hull has been rightly named UK City of Culture for 2017!
Anything else you love about it here?
That was just for starters. Sport, heritage, high adrenalin, country walking – whatever you want, we’ve got it.
And I haven’t even mentioned cycling and a certain world’s largest annual sporting event that we hosted!
Fantastic, thanks for sparing us a few minutes of your time Gary as we know how busy you are promoting Yorkshire to the world. On behalf of Gorgeous Cottages, my owners and Yorkshire generally a big thank you for being such a ‘tour de force’ (forgive the pun) and for doing so much for God’s Own Country in your role at Welcome to Yorkshire.
