Christmas in Yorkshire

The pretty coastal town of Robin Hood’s Bay travels back in time to the Victorian period from the 7th – 9th December. With costumes, music and traditional activities this is a fun festival for the whole family. You can even visit a couple of Gorgeous Cottages (Lilly’s Cottage and Albion Hall) that will be open for the weekend.

Santa Special Trains

A great option for children is a trip on one of the NYMR’s special santa trains. Father Christmas himself will be travelling on the railway which take a very scenic route through the North York Moors and there’s an on-board grotto plus lots of fun festive activities.

Harrogate Christmas Market – 15th – 18th November

This annual 4-day event takes place on The Stray in the Montpellier quarter of Harrogate and includes nearly 200 stalls. It’s worth making a weekend of it and visiting some of Harrogate’s great shops and bars while you are there.

Knaresborough Christmas Market – 1st and 3rd December

Knaresborough Christmas Market

The very pretty Yorkshire town of Knaresborough is home to a Christmas extravaganza on the first weekend of December. As well as an array of stalls there is live music, mulled wine and mince pies.

Malton Christmas Food Market – 8th and 9th December

Malton has become a bit of a hub for artisan food producers and their monthly food market has a Christmas special during December. The perfect chance to stock up on cheese, cakes, chocolate and other Christmas treats.

Skipton Yuletide Festival and Christmas Market – 2nd and 9th December

Running the full length of Skipton High Street, the market is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year. The day closed with a procession to Holy Trinity Church and a traditional Christmas Carol service.

Winter Walks

With two National Parks (the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors) plus a very scenic coastline, there are plenty of pretty walks to try at any time of year. There is something particularly magical though about a wintery walk and here are some great ones to try this Christmas in Yorkshire.

The Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way Yorkshire Coast

Enjoy wonderful views from dramatic cliff-tops along this famous coastal path that runs all the way from Saltburn to Filey on the Yorkshire Coast. Breathe in some crisp sea air on this refreshing journey but make sure you wrap up warmly!

You can do a lovely circular walk from Helmsley (the only market town in the North York Moors National Park) to Rievaulx Abbey. Enjoy the lovely view from Rievaulx Terrace and then treat yourself to a coffee and mince pie on your return. There are plenty of tearooms to choose from!
