The Granary is a fabulous 2-bedroom luxury holiday cottage in a sleepy little village called Sheriff Hutton, just 10 miles north of York.
In this Cottage Owner Spotlight we talk to Gilly Gordon-Finlayson and find out a little more about the history of the cottage, and how it all started for them as owners.
The Granary Holiday Cottage – The owner’s story
The Granary Cottage sits on the land of Cheese Vat Farm in Sheriff Hutton in the North York Moors. As you may have guessed from the name, Cheese Vat Farm was originally a dairy farm. At one point in its history it was owned by the famous Rowntree family, and the farm also produced cheese for the Cornborough Estates.
Current owners Gilly and John Gordon-Finlayson decided to convert the old 2-story Granary barn on the farm in 2007. They also extended the building by converting the derelict piggery which stood beside it…
So how did The Granary Holiday Cottage come about?
‘It just seemed like a good idea at the time. In 2001 Building Planners would only let us convert the old building into a holiday property, so it was that or let it fall down. We were initially very concerned if we could make it work…But we love the area so much, and so no reason why others shouldn’t do the same…’
What work did you have to do to the cottage?
‘We completely gutted the place and started again. The outside walls are about all that remains of the original building! We got a bit carried away with the ‘spec’, but it has stood the test of time!’
What are the highs and lows of owning a luxury holiday cottage?
‘The highs are definitely receiving happy guests and reading their comments in the visitors book. The lows are when there just seems to be no pleasing some guests. Luckily this has only happened a couple of times in the 6 years we’ve been doing this! You feel responsible for people’s holidays and therefore I worry that everything is ok for them.’
What would be your advice to anyone looking to buy a luxury holiday cottage?
‘Accept that cleanliness must be your top priority.’
