The Lodge LHB Holiday Cottage – The owner’s story

The Lodge LHB - a fantastic 200 year old luxury holiday cottage in the Yorkshire Dales

The Lodge LHB is a 200 year old character cottage in the Yorkshire Dales, just a few miles from Pateley Bridge.  Current owner Roger Tushingham has a particularly fond connection with this holiday cottage, as it was once his own home…

So how did The Lodge LHB Holiday Cottage come about?

‘We bought The Lodge for our own family home, nearly 30 years ago.  It became a holiday cottage by happy accident – We moved to Devon for my work just at the time of the financial crash when houses were not exactly ‘flying off the shelf’. We loved the place anyway, so we decided to keep the house and to cover some cost by taking holiday lets’

What made you choose this particular cottage and this location?

‘We bought the place because we loved it and wanted to live there. It was our main house for twenty seven years and could be again in the future. The setting is one of total tranquillity and yet it’s just a couple of miles from the bustling market town of Pateley Bridge with all the amenities of Harrogate just a further fifteen minutes away. The Lodge itself has tremendous character; you can almost feel the tensions of life slip away as you walk through the door.’

What do you know of the history of the cottage?

The Lodge holiday cottage in the Yorkshire Dales - as it used to be

‘The Lodge has an interesting history, it’s noted in old books about the area, some of the tales are re-printed in the notes we leave for guests. It was a youth hostel for a number of years; we occasionally got the odd knock on the door from past guests with stories of adventures at the Lodge in their younger days. We’ve been snowed in, snowed out and walked into town under a full moon. We’ve listened to the wind howling outside from our warm sheltered fireside and we’ve woken to the sound of birdsong on a warm spring morning, the list goes on and on. Of course, we don’t know what happens these days but a week at the Lodge will certainly be memorable!’

What work did you have to do to the holiday cottage?

‘Its 230 years old so obviously over the years we’ve done quite a lot of work to it. However, I have to say the previous owner did an amazing job with the basic structure, re-laying the 2” thick stone roof, making good the very thick stone walls, all in a most sympathetic way. Although The Lodge Holiday Cottage has all the advantages of heating, electricity, running water and high speed broadband, sitting by the fireside in candlelight it’s easy to imagine life at the house hundreds of years ago.’

What are the highs and lows of owning a luxury holiday cottage?

‘Of course, the principal benefit is being able to enjoy the place ourselves. We’ve always had happy times there and it’s nice to think that when we’re not using it the place is giving pleasure to other people. An empty house is not a happy house; I’m sure our guests appreciate the ambiance and will treasure their own memories of the place as we do.’

What would be your advice to anyone looking to buy a luxury holiday cottage?

‘We’re a bit unusual in so far as we didn’t buy the place as a holiday cottage, but I would say the key thing is the location; it’s got to be an area you enjoy, where you’ll be happy with the activities on offer. Of course Nidderdale and the wider area of the Yorkshire Dales fits’ the bill for anyone with an appreciation of the outdoor rural life. The area is stunning, if you can find a house with half the character of the Lodge in such a location, then why not go for it. Years of holiday fun and a reasonable investment to boot!’
