18th Century stone cottage located in a beautiful spot to provide an idyllic Yorkshire Retreat

This 18th-century stone cottage is the perfect romantic getaway for those couples wanting to discover the rugged natural beauty of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Nestled amongst a terrace of pretty cottages in the peaceful hamlet of Healaugh, you will find it easy to relax in the rural tranquillity. Despite the quiet surroundings, you are only 1.5 miles from Reeth, which is often referred to as ‘the capital of Swaledale’. It is a delightful village with some stunning panoramic views and scenery. It also has a range of shops and restaurants to choose from and a regular market. There is plenty of heritage to find out about as Reeth once played a vital role in the lead-mining industry. This area of Yorkshire is popular with both walkers and cyclists, boasting a number of trails and routes to choose from. Other outdoor activities are available at centres in the area, such as fishing, canoeing, caving, climbing, abseiling.

This quintessential English cottage, with trailing plants around its door, is charming and cosy. Original features such as exposed stone walls, beams and window seats add character, whilst the light, neutral tones bring a clean, fresh feel to it. Traditional country-cottage furniture is in keeping with the heritage of the property and will instantly make you feel at home.

Stepping through the front door, you will find yourself in the good-sized, open-plan living space, which is separated by the stairs. The wood burner in the lounge creates a snug feeling on a cold evening and the carpet adds to the sense of comfort. Moving past the small dining table and chairs and up the one step into the kitchen, you will notice the brightness from the light cabinets and tiled floor. The kitchen is well-equipped and has everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Up the steep, narrow staircase, there is a lovely king-size room and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. Outside, you can escape to the south-facing, cottage garden – the perfect spot for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine.

  • 1 king-size bedroom
  • Bathroom with shower-over-bath and WC
  • Smart TV
  • Woodburner
  • Kitchen: oven, hob, microwave and a fridge/freezer and washing machine
  • Multi fuel stove
  • Pub and shops 1 mile
  • Off-road parking available
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details

Richmond (14 miles) is a charming market town on the borders of Wensleydale and Swaledale. It boasts an 11th-century castle, fine Georgian architecture, a historic Georgian theatre and a large cobbled market square as some of its many attractions. Stroll into town for a cup of Yorkshire tea at one of the many tea rooms there or pop over for dinner at one of the excellent restaurants.

The gorgeous River Swale runs through the town and less than a mile across the river are the River Swale Waterfalls. You can walk in either direction along the river and deep into the countryside without having to go anywhere near the car. We also recommend exploring the restored former Richmond Railway Station which has lots to entertain young and old including a small cinema, cafe/restaurant, gallery, microbrewery and artisan bakery.

Richmond is also known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' so expect stunning Dales scenery within minutes of leaving the town. Peppering this glorious countryside are countless attractive little towns and villages, and if you enjoy a bit of surreal entertainment, how about a visit to the quite brilliant Forbidden Corner, an attraction full of statues and hidden surprises, 11.5 miles away near Middleham.

The historic village of Easby, home to Easby Abbey, is just 13 miles away. Set on the banks of the River Swale, the abbey is the perfect spot for a picnic in the summer months. There are lots of other breathtaking sights to explore in the Dales, including Aysgarth Falls (11.5 miles) which were featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves! The nearby village of Aysgarth (12 miles) boasts many great options to eat and if you visit in spring, you can’t leave without a visit to Freeholders’ Wood where bluebells, anemones and primroses will be in full bloom.

This is a superb area for walkers and cyclists with many routes from the doorstep or just a short distance away, including Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk, which passes close by, and the Pennine Way (around 12 miles away).

The cottage is small, well equipped and nicely presented. The bed is very comfortable. It is a cottage for walkers as there are wonderful walks right from the door and an easy one and a half mile walk into Reeth along the riverbank or across the fields.

Had no control what time hot water was coming on so if it was late and you wanted a bath water would not be very hot. Other great cottage.
