Property code: G0095

This spacious and contemporary three-bedroom cottage nestles on the banks of Crakehall Beck in Little Crakehall, a picture-postcard Yorkshire Dales village. Set beside one of the few working flour mills in the country (run by the cottage owners), with a private terrace looking out towards the Beck and the fantastic landscapes of Wensleydale and Nidderdale just a few miles away, it's an idyllic spot for a relaxing country break.

The layout of the interior is designed to maximise the lovely view of the water, so the sitting room is on the lower ground level, opening out onto a large terrace with a bridge over the stream. This sunny open space is also the dining area with the kitchen down here too. Throw open the patio doors and have your breakfast with the sound of birdsong and the gentle lapping of the water as a backdrop.

Back upstairs to the three generous bedrooms, two of which have super king-size beds that can be made up as singles, ideal for families or groups of friends with various sleeping arrangements. The third bedroom has a king-size bed. All of the bedrooms are also en-suite, two with a shower and the third featuring a bath with shower overhead. Each bedroom feels luxuriously roomy and with a classic colour palette used throughout, they feel peaceful and calm, the perfect combination for an excellent night's sleep.

Outside, there are several seating areas, the first is the large terrace by the patio doors, there is also a sheltered spot alongside this where the garden furniture sits. Head up the external stone steps and you'll find a third little patio, just outside one of the bedrooms. Wander over the private bridge to the rear of the cottage and along the banks of the Beck. It opens up into a lovely open green space with meadows and trees all around. Take a picnic and enjoy the slow pace of river life. Head up in the opposite direction and a public footpath across the fields takes you through open countryside. Or simply stroll up to the village green, have a drink at the friendly pub and settle down to watch the cricket team battle it out by the large manor house.

Kingfisher can also be booked along with Wren to accommodate larger groups of up to eight people.

The cottage is located in Little Crakehall, just outside the market town of Bedale. It is set in a unique heritage site with a historic working watermill which has featured in various TV programmes and films, including the BBC's Countryfile series. The village itself is very pretty, a large green is overlooked by the manor house and the pub, and there are a cricket ground and a children's park in the centre of the village. The walk to the village green from the cottage is a pleasant 5-minute stroll across the river.

Beyond the village, the handsome town of Bedale is worth a visit. Stop for a coffee before making your way around the town's antique shops. In the opposite direction, you'll find Leyburn (8.5 miles), an archetypical slice of Dales market town life where traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gather around a handsome town square, which hosts a busy market every Friday. Leyburn is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London if you fancy picking up a bargain. The nearby town of Richmond (9.5 miles) is similar in many ways and has a lovely setting along the River Swale.

There are lots of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights all within close range of the cottage. Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle are both within 16 miles and the picturesque villages of West Burton and Askrigg are under 20.5 miles, so lots of choices for things to do if you want to get out and about. If walking is your thing, the Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker's paradise.

A very well appointed 3 bedroom holiday home in a great location for access to the dales. We had a perfect sleep and enjoyed having our own en-suite. The owners Lionel and Alison were at hand for recommendations for walks and eating out as well as showing us the workings of historic water mill. I will highly recommend to my friends and family.

Really nice cottage with three large bedrooms on the same level as the parking area so no humping cases upstairs & all with their own bathrooms which is a real bonus. The village is very quiet but close by is Bedale if you prefer a choice of eateries and a few pubs. Wow!! What a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing holiday. Even with a thunderstorm we relaxed in the lounge and looked through the french doors at the trees and the rain. It was mesmerising. In my 73 years of holidays I have never been so relaxed. Thank you Alison and Lionel for the loan of your beautiful cottage. Hopefully we will be back.
