Steeped in history, this property isn’t just a holiday cottage, it’s a 1610 cottage that offers a rare, tangible connection to England’s past. Located on the tranquil outskirts of a quiet village just 2 miles from the vibrant harbour of Whitby, this home is a masterclass in preserved heritage. A mere 2.5 miles from the beach and surrounded by the North York Moors' forests and dales, you won't have far to go to uncover the vast array of natural gems nearby. A visit to Mallyan Spout waterfall (8 miles) is a must. It can be enjoyed as part of a 3-mile route starting and finishing in the village of Goathland. Upon your return, nip into one of the village's pub for a drink and meal. Newholm is just over 2 miles away from Whitby, where there are plenty of shops, eateries and bars to discover.

The cottage’s pedigree is cemented by its former resident, the famed 19th-century geologist and fossil collector Martin Simpson. The property boasts a historical photograph of Simpson standing at the front door. As such, when guests step over the threshold, they are following in the footsteps of one of Whitby’s most significant historical figures, staying in the home where he lived while documenting the geological wonders of the Yorkshire coast. The interior is a treasure trove of original features. In the front porch, guests are greeted by the heavy click of the original 17th-century latch door, opening onto the dining room which reveals a fascinating architectural rarity: a traditional coffin drop in the wooden ceiling – a poignant reminder of the cottage’s deep history. The living space is anchored by a magnificent stone, inglenook fireplace where you can gather around the wood burner in a fireplace that has warmed residents for four centuries. This room also features a Smart TV and comfortable sofas. The charm and character of the property flows through to the well-presented and fully equipped kitchen. You can dine in here, or in the dining room, with dual-aspect views of the garden. On the other side of the kitchen, you’ll find one of the home’s two double bedrooms. It’s served by a chic shower room. Head up the stairs from the lounge to the master double bedroom. Relax in the free-standing roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom at the end of a fun-packed day.

The cottage is set within half an acre of mature private gardens; challenge your family or friends to croquet on the lawn or enjoy a Pimm’s in the summerhouse. Rest a spell in the rose garden, before taking your lunch alfresco on the patio. While our gardens offer total seclusion, the energetic atmosphere of Whitby is just minutes away. Explore the iconic abbey, wander the historic harbour, or dive into the town’s vibrant festival scene and independent boutiques before returning to the absolute peace of your country cottage. Private parking is available for two cars.
