Tucked away in the heart of Robin Hood’s Bay, this 17th-century cottage is an idyllic coastal bolt-hole for couples yearning to explore and enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and the crashing waves of the sea.

Welcome to a super cosy 17th century cottage tucked away in the heart of Robin Hood's Bay. It's the perfect little hideaway for couples yearning for a break by the sea, with the beach within a half-mile stroll from the doorstep. Hidden away down one of the Bay's myriad of streets and dating back to 1668, once inside, you feel totally secluded with the joy of knowing all the cafes, pubs and shops in the village are within easy reach.

The entrance to the cottage is via a flight of stone steps, leading to the cliff-top garden. Step inside to find a warm and welcoming bijou kitchen/diner. There's a living flame coal effect gas fire to keep you toasty from morning to night, whatever the weather is doing outside.

The handsome kitchen features shaker units and a sleek granite worktop. There are an induction hob, electric oven and built-in microwave as well as a compact fridge and mini freezer. The usual small appliances are also provided including a cafetière for your morning coffee in the garden. Switch on the living flame coal effect gas fire and settle down to eat at the solid oak table. There are few things more pleasurable than a long lazy breakfast by a real fire. For dinner, pop into the local fishmongers for some seafood fresh off the boat.

Make your way into the charming snug sitting room. An original cast iron fireplace provides lots of character, as do exposed beams overhead and original stripped pine doors. Snuggle up on the sofa or settle down on the comfy armchair with a good book. There is a TV, DVD and Wi-Fi for your evening entertainment, and a SONOS sound system to provide your own soundtrack. You'll also find a good stock of local interest books and walking guides available.

The bedroom and bathroom in this cosy coastal cottage are both upstairs in the eaves of the house so do mind your head on the ceiling up here. The bedroom features a double bed and fitted wardrobes to store all your walking gear. Just next door is the stylish bathroom with a bath and shower overhead. Run yourself a warm bath and sink in, the perfect end to a day's walking along the coast.

Outside the cottage, step down into a sweet little sheltered terraced garden complete with a patio, bistro table and rattan chairs. With sunshine all day and naturally sheltered from the elements, it's just the spot for lunch alfresco or an afternoon tipple before heading down into the village for dinner. And later back in the garden, a chimenea provides warmth well into the evening. Secure storage for bikes too.

Set down a charming little street which leads down to the sea in Robin Hood's Bay, you are a 5-minutes’ walk from the beach and a variety of cafes and shops. The road also leads directly onto the Cleveland Way and local footpaths to Fylingdales.

Robin Hood's Bay is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire or the UK for that matter. Once home to the busiest smuggling trade on the Yorkshire coast, said to involve fisherman, clergy and gentry alike, today the village has adopted a much more sedate pace of life. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Walkers can delight in the fact that Wainwright's famous Coast-to-Coast walk starts (or finishes depending which way you look at it) just a few yards from the door. And the bay itself is just one of the many charming locations on the coast.

For dinner, head down to one of the romantic bistros or nautically themed inns where you can soak up the atmosphere with a candlelit dinner over a bottle of wine or two. If you want to dine in, take advantage of the well-stocked local stores, including an excellent fishmonger selling the freshest locally caught crab. Traditional sweet shops stock all your old favourites and there are several little boutiques selling all manner of delightful things.

As hard as it will be to drag yourself away from Robin Hoods Bay, you really ought to explore the rest of the coast. Much like its Cornish counterpart, the Yorkshire coastline is a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, this is ultimate bucket and spade territory. That's not to say it's stuck in the past, in fact, the coast's villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside upmarket champagne and oyster bars.

This region is best known for the gorgeously gothic town of Whitby (5.5 miles). Playing host at one time to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. For a real sense of the town's atmospheric ambience, climb the 199 Abbey steps at dusk and wander around St. Mary's churchyard on the headland. You can further indulge a desire for the macabre on one of the regular ghost walks from Whale Bone Arch on West Cliff.

Although you could happily spend the weekend mooching about the independent shops, bars and cafes along Whitby's bustling medieval streets, it's well worth striking out to sample some of the other less known coastal villages nearby. Sandsend, Staithes and Runswick Bay are all within 15.5 miles, and each has its own unique charm. Ravenscar (11 miles) is also a great spot to go seal watching as they bask in the sunlight around the headland.
