This fantastic property, which originally formed the defensive entrance to the village rectory, is in an idyllic location tucked away in a charming North Yorkshire village. Set in a secluded position just opposite the local church, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a country getaway without any distractions. Take tea for two at the local tearoom, or head to the local pub in Appleton Roebuck (2 miles) for a drink. However you decide to spend your time, this property is bursting with period character and will be waiting for you when you get home and want to put your feet up and relax.

Open the dramatic wooden doors and step into the fresh and bright kitchen which benefits from trendy counter and cabinet lighting paired with regal ceiling lights that make it a pleasure to cook in. Enjoy quick breakfasts at the breakfast bar in the morning so you can head straight out for the day, or head up to the dining area on the first floor where a stunning dining table awaits you for romantic meals. You can both sit at the head of the table, feeling like true kings or queens of days gone by. Gaze out of the beautiful latticed windows and daydream about all the adventures you’re going to have during your stay.

Take an invigorating shower in the downstairs shower room where elegant tiles and fittings remind you of the age of this property, despite having everything you could need for a contemporary stay. There’s even an exposed wooden beam in here, making your shower feel truly indulgent.

Climb the steep stairs up to the open-plan living area, where a stunning super-king-size four-poster bed stands proudly at the end of the room, beckoning you to snuggle under the covers and enjoy the perfect night’s sleep among rich blue tones and unique bed linen. If you can resist diving straight into bed, cosy up together on the sofa in the living area and watch something on TV, or curl up with a book and enjoy some downtime, surrounded by impressive vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams. Intricate details in the wood are still visible and add that extra bit of charm to your holiday.

Outside, a decked area to the side of the property is the ideal spot for an al fresco drink on a sunny evening, enclosed by a beautiful wall on either side and mature trees all around you. If you’ve brought your four-legged friend with you, take a stroll around the church grounds just 100 metres away before heading off around the country lanes in the village.

If you’re looking for lots of pubs, cafes, takeaways and restaurants, nearby Tadcaster (4 miles) is a good place to start. But for more choice along with art galleries and museums, head to York (10 miles). The jewel in North Yorkshire's crown, we think York is one of the best short break destinations in England and is a favourite amongst even the most seasoned of travellers. This ancient walled city has been the north's spiritual capital for 2,000 years, but that's not to say it is stuck in the past; York's affluent population and its influx of tourist pounds has helped to create a cultural and commercial oasis. History seeps out of every cobbled street, but the crooked old buildings house a fantastic range of contemporary designer shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Everywhere in York is easily reachable by foot as this small but perfectly formed city houses most of its main attractions within the city walls. Middle Ages town planning means it can take quite some time to get your bearings but finding your way around the labyrinth of warped streets is part of the fun. Make sure you take in York Minster, The Shambles, the Railway Museum and Betty's tearoom whilst you're there.

If you are looking for outside space in which to relax, you have the choice of a number of parks and gardens, including Dean's Park next to the Minster, the Yorkshire Museum Gardens and next to the River Ouse, and slightly further afield, Rowntree Park (12 miles) with its children's playground, tennis courts and bowling green.

And what's more, it really is a year-round location. Summer days can be spent lounging in one of the gorgeous parks and in the autumn, York comes alive with shop windows sparkling in the dusky light. Its central location also makes a great base from which to explore the rest of glorious Yorkshire, with the Yorkshire Dales (35.5 miles), North York Moors (39.5 miles) and Yorkshire coastline all within easy reach for beautiful walks and adventurous days out.

If walking or cycling is your thing, there are lots of beautiful paths and routes in the area. If you fancy serious hiking, the North York Moors landscape offers some of the best trails in the country. Take a trip up to the top of the high moorlands around Blakey Ridge (35 miles) and breathe in that clear Yorkshire air.

The beautiful market town of Helmsley (39 miles) is within easy driving distance and is well worth a visit. Head 29.5 miles northeast to find Malton, another gorgeous market town offering lots of lovely independent shops and cafes to indulge in, or the charming market town of Easingwold is a great option at 21 miles from the property.

This is a lovely cottage and it felt very special to stay in such a historic building. The combination of the modern bathroom and well equipped kitchen downstairs and the beautiful upstairs space made for a very comfortable and memorable stay. This is a great location with plenty of places to visit within a relatively short drive.

We completely loved our stay at the Gatehouse. Beautiful cottage, in ideal setting. The church is extremely interesting, and the local tearoom is well worth a visit. The Gate House exceeded our expectations.. The kitchen is well equipped with a very quirky kettle and toaster. Wonderful stay. We would highly recommend a visit.

Beautiful gatehouse and village. Like going back in time. One night at 3am we were woken by a fluttering sound and saw two small bats flying around the ceiling. Reported this to the owner.

The gatehouse is even more beautiful than the photos suggest. Everything inside is maintained to a high standard and is spotlessly clean.
