This idyllic stone cottage in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the perfect rural retreat for couples looking to explore the area’s natural beauty. Situated in the peaceful village of Buckden in Upper Wharfedale, there is an abundance of walking and cycling routes on your doorstep, including the hike to the top of Buckden Pike which is above the village. The Dales Way also passes through Buckden on its way from Ilkley in the south to Bowness-on-Windermere in the Lake District, as does the Lady Anne Clifford Way, so you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a picturesque walk amongst breathtaking surroundings. The Dales are also home to many quaint towns and villages with a range of shops to wander around and eateries to stop off at for tea and cake or a pint of Yorkshire ale. The National Park also borders Nidderdale and Forest of Bowland, both of which are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. After a busy day exploring, head home for a quiet meal in the garden or sneak through the gate to the village pub to have a meal cooked for you. The village also has a shop for your convenience.

Cosy and romantic, this attractive cottage has been beautifully finished to ensure guests have a comfortable stay. Traditional décor throughout creates a country-cottage feel, but a few contemporary twists bring it into the 21st century. Exposed beams and warm woods add character, whilst light walls make it seem bright and airy.

Stepping inside, you’ll find yourself in the compact, but well-equipped, open-plan living space. Along one wall is a modern kitchen with all the mod-cons you’ll need to cook up some treats. There is a bistro style table and chairs which offers somewhere ideal to eat your meals. The living area also consists of two stylish winged armchairs for you to rest of an evening, read a book or plan your next adventure. Completing the ground floor is a lovely shower room and WC. Upstairs, there is a delightful double bedroom, which is light and airy with views of the garden and fields beyond.

Adjoined to the owners’ home, you have access to the garden, which has an array of mature plants and shrubs, and affords beautiful views down the valley. A table and chairs on the cottage’s patio offer the perfect spot for a morning coffee or some al fresco dining of an evening. There is private off street parking  next to the cottage for guests.

  • 1 bedroom - double
  • 1 shower room with shower and WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge, dishwasher
  • Smart TV with Netflix, Amazon and Freesat, Alexa dot
  • Off road private parking
  • Lawn garden with patio
  • Regret no children
  • Shop and pub within walking distance
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards

Aysgarth (9.5 miles) is in Wensleydale, within the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales National Park and home to the Aysgarth Falls, which were featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves! The village boasts many great options to eat within less than a mile of the property, including popular pubs and cute cafes. If you visit in spring, you can’t leave without a visit to Freeholders’ Wood where bluebells, anemones and primroses will be in full bloom.

As hard as it will be to tear yourself away from the picturesque village, there’s plenty more to see and do in the local area. Within a 14-mile radius of the property are the charming settlements of Hawes, West Burton and Askrigg. Hawes is a popular market town less than 12 miles from the property and is most famous as being the home of Wensleydale cheese! It also boasts lovely shops, pubs and tearooms. Walkers will also love the town as the Pennine Way passes through it, making it the perfect starting point for exploring the countryside. The small villages of West Burton and Askrigg are 9.5 and 14 miles away respectively, and together offer delightful tearooms and pubs.

The stunning landscape of Wensleydale itself includes 25 miles of lush valleys, criss-crossed with the area’s iconic dry-stone walls. If you enjoy walking and countryside views, you will not be short of things to do, with Wensleydale providing delightful moorland, dale-side and valley walks. Wensleydale is also sandwiched between Wharfedale and Swaledale, if you fancy exploring further afield.

History lovers will be fascinated by visits to Bolton Castle, Middleham Castle and Jervaulx Abbey, which are 14, 18 and 22 miles from the property, respectively. Bolton Castle dates back to the 14th century and once held Mary Queen of Scots prisoner, while Middleham Castle was the childhood home of Richard III. Jervaulx Abbey is the country’s largest privately-owned Cistercian Abbey and offers peace and tranquillity to its visitors.
