Set in the picture-postcard town of Helmsley, surrounded by walking trails in the North York Moors National Park, this charming family-friendly holiday property sleeps three guests in this magical corner of Yorkshire. Helmsley is steeped in history and lies at the gateway to the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (3 miles). Enjoy this charming market town where you’ll find shops, pubs and eateries within half a mile of your holiday home. Source delicious produce and gifts in the market square, surrounded by artisan shops and tempting delis, tearooms and good pub food. Discover Helmsley Castle and its neighbouring walled garden; you may recognise the setting from the recent film adaptation of The Secret Garden. On the outskirts of town, you’ll find the National Centre for Birds of Prey in Duncombe Park. You could almost spend your entire holiday around Helmsley – there is so much to see and do here. Your holiday home is ideal for a couple or family who loves historic market towns with leisure amenities, family-friendly attractions, and a range of local walks and wildlife trails to explore.

Walk up the path to this charming stone holiday cottage, with a welcoming ambience and home from home feel. After a busy day of adventures in this fascinating region, unwind in the cosy surroundings of the kitchen, dining and living area. Catch up on your favourite Yorkshire TV and film moments on the Smart TV – you may recognise scenes from costume dramas and the Harry Potter series. Cook up storm in the well-equipped kitchen, which boasts an electric oven and hob, fridge with an icebox, and convenient dishwasher, plus a washing machine to lighten the load of your holiday packing. Take a peek in your welcome pack too – you may find ingredients to add to your home-cooked meals. Gather around the breakfast bar and tuck into your delicious feast as you catch up on the day. When sleepy heads nod, amble upstairs to find two dreamy bedrooms with ample storage space for luggage and shopping: a king-size bedroom, and a small double bedroom – ideal for children. There’s a stylish family bathroom upstairs with a shower over the bath, and WC; plus a separate ground floor WC. On sunny afternoons, step outside to the rear garden where there’s outdoor furniture where you can soak up the sunny rays and enjoy me-time with a good book, or a quiet mindful moment listening to birdsong. You’ll also find off-road parking for one car on site, plus additional spaces for visitors.

Visit Kirkbymoorside (6 miles), which has a popular Wednesday market, a fascinating folk museum, and a wealth of art and antiques shops to browse. And you’re in the vicinity of Herriot Country and a quintessentially English landscape here; the vet and author James Herriot based many of his stories around the area – visit his former home, now a museum, in Thirsk (14.5 miles) which features in the book and TV series All Creatures Great and Small. Don’t miss the picture-postcard village of Harome (2.5 miles), with its art-inspiring scene of thatched cottages by a village pond. This quiet backwater has a 14th-century inn with gourmet menus – not to be missed. For more holiday-perfect snaps of charming English villages, add Thornton-Le-Dale (14 miles) to your travels around God’s Own Country.

Or head to picturesque Pickering (13 miles), a busy market town near Dalby Forest and the Go Ape! tree-top adventures (18 miles) in the North York Moors. Potter around the pretty streets of Pickering where you’ll find original gifts for friends, beautiful Georgian architecture, and cosy tearooms where you can relax and enjoy the easy pace. Or savour the best regional food produce in the town’s popular restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Don your hiking boots and venture to the high central moorlands for mindful moments with breathtaking views. Or board a steam train on the dog-friendly North York Moors Railway with your canine companion and enjoy a thrilling journey trundling across the North York Moors landscape of heather hills, ancient woods and sparkling streams; the route goes all the way to coastal Whitby so you can enjoy bucket and spade days on the beach. Throughout the North York Moors, you’ll find pretty villages and elegant towns to impress the most discerning of visitors, where honey-hued stone buildings are the perfect fit for the lush green landscape and lofty hills. Other family-friendly attractions include the magnificent country estate of Castle Howard (13.5 miles); Flamingoland (14.5 miles); and the modern history museum Eden Camp (19.5 miles), originally a prisoner of war camp. The cathedral city of York (24.5 miles) is also in reach for a fascinating day trip exploring cobbled medieval streets and shops, a Viking museum, and the allure of York’s Chocolate Story experience.

The sofa & bed were both comfy and the shower was very good. Sturdy outside furniture is available if needed.
