A Grade II listed former School House is the essence of heart-warming Yorkshire country living, offering spacious accommodation for ten guests, enjoying an idyllic rural location with beautiful views and walks in every direction.

Step back in time and stay in this lovely 17th-century property in a pretty village at the heart of the Dales National Park. Sleeping ten guests across five bedrooms, this former schoolhouse offers a charming place to stay and is a fantastic base for your Yorkshire adventures.

The farmhouse-style kitchen is perfectly tailored to leisurely breakfasts around the vast table. The foodies amongst you will take great delight in the array of equipment on offer, and there’s an oil-fired Rayburn oven set the stone alcove. There’s an electric oven, hob and microwave too for all levels of culinary expertise, and the dishwasher too. There is even a Nespresso coffee machine for your caffeine fix. Tucked behind the kitchen is a handy utility room with a fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Follow the open staircase to discover the first of the five bedrooms – a king-size bedroom with vaulted timber-beamed ceilings and antique-style furniture. The exposed stone wall provides rustic charm, and the pretty window seat is a pleasant space to unwind and admire the views. Pamper yourself in the en-suite bathroom and savour long soaks or a refreshing shower. Back downstairs, the contemporary shower room is just the ticket after a long day of activities. There is also a pleasant double bedroom with awe-inspiring views of the valley.

From the hallway, two steps lead down into the snug, a delightful nook that’s equipped with a crackling wood burner for chilly nights. Devour your favourite reads from the comfort of the sofas, or gather to share a pot of tea and a catch up.

Original wooden doors, panelled ceilings and timber beams set the scene in the lounge, inviting you to sink into the comfy sofas with a tipple in hand. The exposed stone floors are covered with rugs for a cosy feel, and will prove very tempting to your canine companion who can snooze away for hours by the roaring wood burner that’s tucked into the inglenook fireplace and framed by a wooden beam. Share bowls of buttery popcorn as you watch films, or gather your entire party for games of charades and family fun.

Climb the second staircase to reach the remaining bedrooms, each one thoughtfully styled and furnished to complement the olde-world details. Two of the bedrooms feature useful zip-and-link beds – one super-king-size that can be made up into a twin, and one king-size that can be transformed into two small 2ft 6 beds, a child-sized treat for sleepovers.

Both bedrooms share the bathroom that’s home to a wonderful corner bath and a separate shower. Completing this floor is an appealing double bedroom with its compact yet practical en-suite shower room.

You’ll have exclusive use of the terrace outside that’s a real suntrap thanks to its south-facing situation with a view of the hillside. Parking for two cars is available at the back of the property, and there is additional roadside parking if your party requires it.

  • 5 Bedrooms - 1 super-king-size zip-and-link (can be made into a twin on request), 1 king-size zip-and-link (can be made into a 2'6" twin on request), 1 king-size and 2 double

  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details

Stay close to home and lace up your hiking boots to start the adventure. Throw a lead on the dog and take to the Gunnerside Beck which winds its way through the Swaledale Valley, one of the most popular valleys in the national park. After a long walk, enjoy a pitstop in the local Ghyllfoot Tea Room or the village pub where tasty meals await, and you can indulge in a sweet treat or two. If you’re not done walking, 6.5 miles away in Keld, join Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk and marvel at the sights along your way.

The cottage is a comfortable stay in a picturesque area. The local pub is due to close down so be aware of this for future stays, as Reeth would be your next nearest I believe (a short drive away). It has all the essential amenities you should need, and the bedrooms are comfortable.

We found School House to be a gem .. perfect location for walks around Reeth and Gunnerside itself. The house is beautifully appointed with good quality furnishings, bedding etc. A great space for a group of friends to enjoy a weekend together.

We loved the cottage. Unfortunately we experienced a power cut during Storm Arwen for the majority of the time in which we stayed. We had to make do with using the bbq and log fires but still loved our experience. We hope to stay again with better luck with the weather!!

This is a fabulous, quirky cottage. Our large family group had a wonderful time. Fantastic walks from the door, great little pub just down the road (you might need to book to eat as they were pretty busy) and lots of gorgeous towns and villages nearby. The scenery is absolutely stunning and we were blessed with great weather too which helped.
