Located in the popular moorland village of Danby, this delightful stone cottage boasts enchanting views across the Esk Valley. Located around 16 miles inland from the seaside town of Whitby, it’s perfect for active friends and families seeking a rural retreat close to coast and countryside. Arranged over three storeys with a sunny, south-facing front garden, this dog-friendly property is the perfect place to rest and recharge after adventurous days on the moors.

Cosy and welcoming throughout with decor that offers a subtle nod to the surrounding countryside, this property is a true home-from-home. Enter via the enclosed front garden and step straight into a bright and inviting lounge/diner. Two large, plush sofas offer the perfect spot to relax after a long, country walk, in front of a crackling open fire on chilly winter days.

Prepare home-cooked meals in the modern country kitchen, located at the rear of the property. With a double electric oven, hob, microwave and even an icemaker, you have everything you need to cook up a storm, while coffee enthusiasts will enjoy a morning brew from the coffee machine. When you’re ready to dish up, gather the clan in the lounge and feast together, while enjoying spectacular valley views.

If you appreciate a little quiet time away from the main group, slip away to the cosy snug with your current read or take advantage of the books and maps about your surrounds to plan some thrilling walks and days out. Alternatively slip away to the bench in front of the property to enjoy a morning cuppa gazing across the valley, or sip a glass of something chilled in the evening while stargazing in the uninterrupted night’s sky.

When it’s time to rest your head, three inviting bedrooms call on the first floor of the property. The double and twin bedrooms both feature built-in wardrobes, while the snug single room has plenty of drawer space. The master suite sits beneath the eaves on the second floor featuring a king-size bed, a bar table and bar stools positioned overlooking the idyllic countryside, and an en-suite shower room. The family bathroom, with freestanding bathtub and walk-in shower, is on the first floor.

Tucked at the head of the Esk Valley, Danby is a small but popular village with a village store, pub, and village green, where you’ll often see sheep grazing freely. From here you can wander out to the moors to pick up numerous walking and cycling routes, or catch the train to Whitby (16 miles) for a day at the coast.

Whitby's narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby's smugglers evade the Government revenue men and tax collectors. They're a unique and much-loved quirk to this part of the world. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of the authentic maritime history of this ancient sea town. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby's gothic yards.

Probably the most visited and best-loved of Yorkshire's seaside resorts, Whitby is an idyllic location for a holiday. With its seaside heritage, excellent restaurants, independent shops and host of bars and cafes along its medieval streets, it has so much to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Whitby is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline; a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That's not to say it's stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire's coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside up-market restaurants and champagne bars.

Nearby Robin Hood's Bay (20.5 miles) is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses, which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is 12 miles away from the cottage, a gorgeous little seaside village which is well worth a visit during your stay. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay are 10 miles away, too, each with their own unique charm.

Surrounding the cottage, the North York Moors offer no end of days out and walking opportunities. Take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area, including Danby itself, Egton, Castleton, and Rosedale. Or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg; we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away.

The cottage was wonderful - very relaxing and comfortable. Lovely bedding and beautiful wool blankets dotted about the place. The view from the front for the cottage is out of this world and really could not be beaten. The cottage had a very loved feel and there were ample towels, cutlery, crockery and pans. Great little cottage in a really nice location. Friendly local pub and bakery/cafe within easy walking distance. Also Danby has a station on the Esk Valley Railway, again within walking distance. Very happy with our stay.

Fabulous quirky cottage. We were made to feel extremely welcome. The cottage was very well equipped with everything we could possibly need. This is a really special cottage. It has beautifully refurbished and provides everything you could want. It is set in the most spectacular location and it is easy to just sit and be at peace with your surroundings. Probably not so good if you have mobility issues but otherwise a wonderful place to be.
