Discover the pretty streets of Helmsley and experience Yorkshire charm in abundance, choosing this delightful terraced cottage as your cosy bolthole. Sleeping five guests across three bedrooms, your homely abode is tucked down a private snickelway and the traditional stone exterior reveals a welcoming retreat characterised by cosy interiors and an open fire.

Simple yet stylish with a slight hint of Art Deco-inspired decor, the capacious lounge/diner has a relaxed atmosphere for chilly evenings snuggling under throws with your hands clasped around a hot chocolate. Warm your toes on the open fire and watch exciting films on the TV, breaking out the board games before enjoying a cheese board and your favourite tipple. A curved archway leads through to the dining space, an elegant nook with further comfortable seating, a rustic wooden table and quirky decorative accessories.

The enthusiastic cooks amongst you will quickly fall in love with the muted shaker-style units, Range-style eclectic oven and wooden flooring in the kitchen. Your fellow guests can perch at the bijou table and prepare the wine whilst you rustle up a culinary masterpiece, transforming an array of locally sourced ingredients into mouth-watering meals fit for a celebration. Gather your entire party in the dining room to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate your Yorkshire get-together.

Open the French doors and let the outside in, or step outside for an al fresco meal in your private courtyard at dusk. With gravel underfoot and garden furniture available for your sole use, your outside space is a real suntrap for sipping an afternoon drink. On the nights you need a break from cooking, Helmsley has a whole host of restaurants to choose from.

Back inside, the steep cottage-style stairs are ingeniously concealed behind an unassuming wooden doorway. Ascend to the first floor and refresh tired limbs in the marvellous shower room. All three bedrooms carry a country cottage vibe with soft bedding and furniture, whether you choose the attractive twin bedroom with its identical beds, the sweet single bedroom, or the cheerful double which has the added bonus of its own TV. This is an excellent option if you are in need of a quiet sanctuary to recharge your batteries.

The beautiful market town of Helmsley is renowned for great restaurants, cafes and delis, but if you fancy a little pampering, you’ll also find a fantastic day spa here. The bustling market square hosts a popular craft and food market, and the history buffs among you will find the ruins of Helmsley Castle fascinating.

Helmsley is situated on the cusp of the North York Moors, which was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987 thanks to its pastures and woodlands. A landscape like no other, its a place of gently rolling hills of heather, ancient woodlands and lazy rivers winding through valleys. If you want to get away from it all take a trip to the top of the high central moorlands. The famous Blakey Ridge affords some of the best views in the country and, if trekking is your thing, you are surrounded on all sides by some truly stunning routes.

The western Moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market towns, and the views from here are simply stunning. There are walks and cycle routes in every direction, and you’ll be within reach of the famous Cleveland Way as well as many more well-known and picturesque moorland walks.

On the edge of the North York Moors, charming Kirkbymoorside is 6 miles away with its treasure trove of art and antique shops, tearooms, Ryedale Folk Museum and a great local market. There is a theme park and zoo at Flamingo Land, 14.5 miles away and Eden Camp, a fascinating modern history museum, is 19.5 miles away.

From here you can move on to the vibrant and attractive Yorkshire market town of Pickering (10 miles), a perfect destination for a relaxing wander around its pretty houses, shops and tearooms. Grand Georgian architecture stands alongside cosy traditional cottages to create a picture-postcard location with several excellent restaurants, pubs and cafes in the town. The wonderful North York Moors Railway starts in Pickering where you can catch a steam train to Whitby and back again through some of the most picturesque countryside in Yorkshire.

Every thing was near perfect except the weather was so cold for a walking holiday, and one of our party of 4 could not go as the night before she slipped in the bath and cracked her ribs. We were not able to sit in the lovely garden because it was so cold.

Lavender Cottage is in a fabulous location being less than 200metres from the Market Square. It is well equipped and the owners left milk and a lovely cake for us on arrival. There are some lovely walks (Ash Dale and Cleveland Way to Rievaulx Abbey). The town has many shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. Helmsley Brewery is definitely worth a visit Read moreif you enjoy a real ale. Hide

Fabulous centrally located cottage in Helmsley. The place was spotlessly clean and had all of the home comforts needed. I would 100% recommend this cottage.
