Located on the fringe of the Howardian Hills, Crayke is a peaceful village, steeped in history, with a castle dating to the 15th century and a historic church. Located close to the market town of Easingwold, it makes a great base for adventures in Yorkshire.

Nestled in the heart of North Yorkshire, Easingwold (2.5 miles) is a charming market town at the foot of the Howardian Hills. Know affectionately to locals as ‘The Wold’, this picturesque town boasts stunning Georgian architecture, and is home to a host of independent retailers from family-run newsagents to independent boutiques and galleries.

This thriving town is centred on its biggest attraction ¬– the pretty Georgian marketplace. The weekly Friday market is a hub of activity with stalls selling fresh local produce, handmade crafts and artisanal goods. In addition, there’s a monthly farmers’ market held on the third Wednesday of every month and a monthly artisan market on the second Saturday of every month.

In recent years, this delightful town has developed a reputation as a foodie haven, thanks in part to the market. Home to one of the top three delicatessens in Britain, one of the England’s best tearooms, along with a host of award-winning gastropubs and a superb bakery, this is one destination you shouldn’t miss if you love good food.

For those who love the great outdoors, this area is a paradise for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers alike. A richly varied landscape of ancient woodland, farmland, fens, historic parkland and scattered settlements, the Howardian Hills is simply stunning. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to castles, monasteries and grand houses, including Kirkham Priory (14 miles) and Castle Howard (13 miles). Alternatively, head north to the Yorkshire Moors (from around 14 miles), a vast expanse of rugged heather moorland, peppered with ancient ruins and steeped in history.

This area isn’t just about landscapes and nature. Steeped in history and culture, the city of York is just 13.5 miles away, offering a multitude of attractions from the imposing York Minster to the cobbled streets of the Shambles.

Had a lovely 5 night break in Chestnut cottage, cant fault anything, perfectly placed for getting about to visit other towns. Lovely tray of goodies when we arrived and milk in the fridge which was so thoughtful, and the cookies went down a treat with a cup of Yorkshire tea.

A very nice cottage in a very nice area. I didn't realise it was next to a working farm but this was not a problem. We hope to return in the summer months to visit the places and stately homes that were unfortunately closed during the winter months. The owners made themselves readily available if there were any problems, which there wasn't. This waRead mores one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in and we have booked quite a few over the years. I would highly recommend this property to anyone. Hide

Good and comfortable cottage. It was very clean and big enough for my wife and I. Well located in a place thats quiet and peaceful. It was during the heat wave when we visited and we did not do local walks because it was too warm but drove to the beach and leisure centre for swimming. All in all, its a very nice cottage.
