This beautiful cottage enjoys an enviable position in a peaceful riverside location, yet lies right in the heart of the bustling village of Holmfirth.

Envisage your perfect holiday amongst the luscious green landscape of the Yorkshire countryside, spending your days navigating a tapestry of pastures, wooded valleys and sweeping hills crisscrossed with dry stone walls and craggy pathways. The idyllic market town of Holmfirth is the perfect couple’s getaway thanks to its beautiful surroundings and pretty streets studded with eateries, and this stone cottage offers a cosy base for your explorations. Sleeping two in complete comfort, it’s brimming with old-world charm and has everything you need to brush aside your worries and relax.

Shake off your boots and don your sheepskin slippers as you make your way across the flagstone floors. A tall glass of wine is the perfect accompaniment to lazy evening TV viewing from the vantage point of the sofas. Encircled by original stone walls, a wooden-clad ceiling and featuring a wood burner-effect electric fire in the fireplace, the lounge/diner reverberates wellbeing from corner to corner. Pop the fire on and snuggle up to watch the flames dance, letting the warm glow soothe you.

Stoop low and mind your head as you duck into the kitchen through the narrow doorway and be amazed at its surprising contemporary twist as you notice the art deco-inspired tiles and modern-chic cabinetry. Wooden worktops and useful appliances such as an electric oven, hob and microwave provide everything you need to rustle up special meals to enjoy back at the table in the lounge/diner. Return from your jaunts with armloads of artisan produce, local ingredients and mouth-watering deli treats and get ready to plan a feast, rifling through your favourite recipes to choose the main contender for a celebratory meal. There’s a handy fridge/freezer for chilling your wine and storing your spoils, and you’ll also discover some thoughtful goodies and essentials in your welcome pack. For practicality, there is a washing machine, so no need to fret about muddy garments after your walks.

Upstairs, the bedroom is a peaceful haven after a busy day roaming the countryside, lulling you into a state of calm with its muted hues, simple pine furniture and elegantly dressed king-size bed. Wake up to the sound of the market town springing to life all around you, gently ruching up the blind to perch in the window seat with a warming morning brew. Attached to the bedroom is the sleek bathroom, a sanctuary for evening pampering sessions. Sink into the bubbliest of baths with your favourite toiletries and a good page-turner of a book.

Venturing outside will reward you with a pleasant space to pause and reflect with your first coffee of the day. This small patio area is charmingly quirky for summer drinks at the bistro-style table, so you’ll be sorely tempted to unwind with a cup of tea, listening to the sounds of the river bubbling past. Off-road parking is nearby subject to availability, but there are also public car parks within walking distance that carry a small charge.

Holmfirth is a charming market town that eagle-eyed viewers may recognise from its ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ fame. Surrounded by the glorious countryside of the Holme Valley and tucked on the cusp of the Peak District, the area is a haven for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. The adrenaline-fuelled cyclists amongst you will relish the opportunity to tackle Holme Moss, a steep and exhilarating route that formed part of the Yorkshire Grand Depart, Tour de France route 2014. Fishing, sailing and golfing opportunities are available in abundance, and the tranquil country lanes are excellent for pony trekking.

Holmfirth itself is a treasure trove of antique shops, independent boutiques and tearooms, best enjoyed after exploring the town’s fascinating heritage via Holmfirth’s Blue Plaque Trail. For culture vultures, the Holme Valley and Colne Valley are also renowned for their rolling event calendars that feature gems such as an annual folk festival, a popular art market and the legendary Cuckoo Day in Marsden and Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival.

You’ll be situated 14.5 miles away from Halifax, a thriving market town that once served as the centre of the wool trade in Victorian England, which blessed the town with wealth and good fortune. Many of the opulent buildings and monuments from this time can still be seen as you walk around the town, including Piece Hall – a magnificent Georgian building that was once the place where weavers sold their cloth. Nowadays, it’s a fabulous place to grab a tasty bite to eat or peruse the independent shops and boutiques, as well as catch some outdoor performances.

Other impressive buildings include Halifax Minster, the town’s gothic church; the Grade II-listed Halifax Town Hall, created by the same man who designed the Houses of Parliament; and Shibden Hall, a 15th-century historic home surrounded by a glorious park, once home to the ‘first modern lesbian’, Anne Lister, who wrote her secret diaries there. The parkland is an excellent place to spend a day, where you can walk beside the pretty flowerbeds, row across the Mere or ride on the miniature train which will delight any children in your party. Kids will also love Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, which is sure to capture their imaginations with its 400 interactive exhibits.

If you enjoy food, make sure to visit Halifax’s Borough Market, which is a stunning Grade II-listed building hosting an award-winning covered market throughout the week. Sample some local produce and pick up a tasty treat to enjoy in your cosy cottage.
