Head to the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline for a romantic retreat, cosy and contemporary interior for a relaxing getaway for two.

Enjoy a romantic retreat to this gorgeous Yorkshire hideaway, less than 1 mile from Castleton and nestled in the picturesque Esk Valley, deep in the North York Moors National Park. Sleeping just two guests, and welcoming a pair of happy hounds with open paws, this unique former bothy could be just perfect for a couple that is passionate about the great outdoors. From here stroll into Castleton, with its shop, tearoom and pubs, or venture out on long walks and cycle rides across the undulating countryside right from the front door.

Plan day trips out in your spectacular surroundings while you are here. Take a journey on the scenic Esk Valley Railway from Middlesbrough, 18.5 miles away, to Whitby, 17 miles from the cottage. Then spend the day exploring the seaside town’s alleyways and cobbled streets which offer an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The Esk Valley Railway links to many of the cycling and walking routes in the area including the Cleveland Way, the Esk Valley Walk and the Whitby to Danby cycling route. Slightly further afield, a 21-mile drive, are the bustling market towns of Pickering, with its castle and museum, and Helmsley, which also has a castle and is home to the National Centre for Birds of Prey.

Make your way into this Grade II-listed holiday home, which offers an ideal bolthole for two all year round. It has a unique interior and creatively designed internal space, where you and your significant other can relax after exhilarating days out exploring this corner of the country. Features such as a high vaulted ceiling and Yorkstone floor make it both stylish and inviting.

Head over to the contemporary kitchen area to make a cup of fresh Yorkshire tea to enjoy with the traditional fat rascal cakes bought on one of your excursions. Find the kitchen has everything you need, including an electric hob/oven, fridge and microwave, to help you cook tasty meals for two. Lay the table inside for a romantic meal or sit out in the fresh air, taking in the beautiful views of the rolling countryside as you dine.

After dinner, unwind on the sofa and find a film to watch together on the Smart TV or wander outside for an evening stroll through the impressive surrounding moorland. Return to enjoy a steaming hot shower in the stylish wet room, which is warmed with underfloor heating. When you are ready to close your eyes for the night, climb the ladder to the elevated hand-crafted oak bed to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Awake to absorb the beautiful views over coffee or even breakfast out in the charming, private garden area. Sit out here long into the evening, gazing up at the stars beside a roaring fire in the fire pit. Find there is parking for one car at the cottage.

Take the time to really explore Whitby, just 17 miles away, when you say at this tranquil retreat near Castleton. Probably the most visited and much-loved of Yorkshire’s seaside resorts, Whitby offers excellent restaurants, independent shops and a host of bars and cafes along its medieval streets. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes among others, the town’s rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda’s Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby’s crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries.

Whitby’s narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help the town’s smugglers evade the government revenue men and tax collectors. They are a unique and much-loved design in this part of the world. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of the authentic maritime history of this ancient sea town. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby’s gothic yards.

Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll’s work, Whitby was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline, a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long, sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That’s not to say it’s stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire’s coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside upmarket restaurants, champagne bars and fine dining establishments.

Nearby Robin Hood’s Bay, 22 miles from your base, is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is closer, just 13 miles from the cottage, and is a gorgeous little seaside village which is also well worth a visit during your stay in Yorkshire. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay, both 11 miles away, each also have their own unique charm.

Joe, the owner is lovely, friendly but not in your face! The Bothy is quirky and of a high quality, also lots of room outside too for the dogs. In a beautiful area. The bed is very comfortable but a bit of a challenge to get off it!

Veru cosy little cottage with great view, fireplace, bbq. Nicely decorative and though tiny there's place enough for groceries and bags and suitcases. Everything has been thought of. Nice owners too.
