Head into the North York Moors National Park or the North Riding Forest Park from this handsome stone cottage in the scenic village of Thornton le Dale or Thornton Dale. Overlooking the picturesque village square and pretty Thornton Beck, the enticing, two-bedroom retreat sleeps four guests and is well positioned for anyone wishing to pull on their walking boots and head straight off on woodland walks and countryside trails.

Just 2.5 miles from the vibrant market town of Pickering, with its medieval castle, museum and heritage trains along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, it is also ideal for guests wishing to be close to shops and eateries. The location could also suit families keen to plan a day out to the coast at Scarborough, 22.5 miles away, while they are in this part of the world.

Take a step up to the front door and let yourselves in to find yourselves in a welcoming lounge. Put your feet up in here after your long walks, catch up on your favourite boxset on the Smart TV or open your holiday novels and unwind for a spell.

When mealtimes beckon, head through to the kitchen/diner to prepare tasty dishes with the local produce you have bought and then gather round the table together. On warm days, dine outside at the table next to the beck instead.

Both bedrooms are upstairs at this comfortable Yorkshire cottage. These include a double bedroom and a single. The family bathroom is also here.

Sit outside on the terrace next to the beck whenever the weather permits and look for kingfishers and herons on the banks. Parking for this cottage is on the street, subject to availability.

Delightful Thornton le Dale is a pretty village with a handful of shops and eateries for you to enjoy during your stay. Just 2.5 miles from the market town of Pickering, however, guests also benefit from proximity to the wider array of amenities here too, however.

While away your afternoons in Pickering, where you can appreciate the Georgian architecture which stands alongside cosy, traditional cottages. Find time to catch a steam or heritage diesel train along the North York Moors Railway, which starts in Pickering and runs to Whitby and back through some of the most picturesque countryside in Yorkshire.

Further afield, you can explore the awe-inspiring North York Moors, a landscape of gently rolling hills of heather, ancient woodland and lazy rivers winding through lush green valleys. If you want to head deeper into the naturally beautiful landscape, take a trip to the top of the high central moorlands, an area known for its superb hiking.

Also visit the other delightful towns and villages of these fascinating moors, where honey-coloured sandstone buildings lend a warm contrast to the deep purple and green of the surrounding hills. The town of Kirkbymoorside is 11.5 miles from the cottage and is a treasure trove of art and antiques’ shops and tearooms. Also visit the Ryedale Folk Museum while you are here and make time to browse in the lively market on Wednesdays.

Family favourite Flamingo Land theme park and zoo is 9 miles away, and Eden Camp, a fascinating modern history museum, is an 11.5-mile drive. Head to Scarborough, 22.5 miles away, to see the castle or to go to the beach and enjoy a traditionally British day out at the seaside.

A charming character property in a delightful village. Extremely well decorated warm and comfortable. A lovely property, with a side door leading to the river and the delightful ducks. Arriving to extra goodies like chocolate, biscuits and crisps ( as well as the usual tea and coffee) makes you feel welcome.

We had a marvellous stay at Forge Cottage, probably one of the best places we have stayed. Decorated with style, and so comfortable, warm and cosy. Everything required is provided, and is of a high standard. Lots of little extras, give that 5* feel. The ducks are a bonus. The cottage was immaculate throughout, situated right in the centre of the village. The car had to be parked in a carpark away from the cottage, but literally a 2 minute walk - free car park permit was provided. Everything, shops, pub, ice cream parlour were literally across the road! Stream alongside with ducks - very entertaining.
