The grand Victorian spa town of Harrogate is regularly listed as the best place to live in the UK. This truly gorgeous Yorkshire town combines traditional elegance with contemporary style effortlessly.

Best known for its antiques and fine art, Harrogate has antique dealers and galleries around every corner, particularly around the Montpellier Quarter. If buying old paintings and furniture isn't your bag, there are a host of other high fashion outlets nestled alongside lavish interior boutiques, punctuated with enough fine restaurants and cafes to keep you fuelled for weeks.

A visit to Bettys Tearooms is a must and, if you have time, we highly recommend a session at the famous Turkish Baths (30 miles) to rejuvenate the spirit and soul after a day on the town. Harrogate is famous for its outdoor spaces with lots of parkland and greenery everywhere. The RHS gardens at Harlow Carr (24.5 miles) are a fantastic option for those with a nose for nature.

Harrogate is also very close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors so it makes the perfect base from which to explore the glorious Yorkshire landscape and its many stunning natural sights. The breathtaking Nidderdale is 8 miles north, and you will be driving through some of the most dramatic Dales scenery. We highly recommend a day trip to the gorgeous spa town of Ilkley (16 miles) combined with a visit to Bolton Abbey, 17 miles away.

Lovely welcome pack and tidy clean cottage but located on a busy road. The very small, very shaded court yard garden is accessed via steep cellar steps or from the front door and around the side....disappointing for a summer stay

We had a wonderful week in Merdale Cottage. Oxenhope is a gorgeous village, the Co-op well stocked, the pubs welcoming. The Sunday lunch at The Lamb was very generous and totally delicious and the pizzas (Thursday night) the best I have ever tasted. The dog loved the walk up by the reservoir (just up the hill) and Penistone Hill Country Park (off lRead moreead, moors and rabbits...). We had a lovely welcome (plus dog) in the Parish Church and loved coming 'home' to the cottage each day. Thank you. Hide

Well equipped , charming cottage set in beautiful scenery . Easily walkable to the village . However , it is on a busy road and the traffic noise is significant, especially early in the morning . This is a lovely house. It is very spacious and it was great to have a dressing room. The reading room is an extra bonus with binoculars provided by the host so you can enjoy the views. We spotted a deer and it was fun to look down on the birds! It is comfortable, warm and has everything you need. Thank you

End of terrace house on a narrow road, busy during rush hours. Not noisy but difficult to negotiate with a lively dog. There was a strange smell on entering the property (damp?). The garden is accessed via steep cellar steps. Nice welcome pack. Well-equipped kitchen and bathroom. Comfy bed, inviting sitting room. We had constant drizzle but there aRead morere some nice walks nearby, and the bus service to Haworth/Hebden Bridge is reliable. Railway station and Co-op easy to walk to. Hide
