Enjoy the elegance of town life while tucked away in this beautiful bolthole at the heart of Middleham, famous for its castle and rich horse racing heritage.

Nestled between two rivers, Middleham is home to charming cobbled market squares, Georgian and Victorian tearooms, independent galleries and postcard-pretty cottages – among them this beautiful two-bedroomed town centre abode.

Step off the cobbles and into a small porch where you can exchange shoes for slippers and move effortlessly into the immaculate sitting room where tasteful furnishings and original artwork set the scene for relaxing evenings before the wood burner. The bow window allows in light and affords a view over the market square beyond; simply draw the curtains when you want to shut out the world and unwind.

To the rear, the dining hall has stairs leading to the upper floors and feeds into the kitchen where, if you’d like a break from the local eateries and takeaways, you can create delicious home-cooked meals.

The courtyard garden to the rear of the kitchen is an ideal spot for bedtime drinks and a final sniff of fresh air for your pets, as up to two canine companions are welcome to holiday here.

Upstairs, the layout is perfect for a small family or party of friends, with a king-size bedroom and bathroom on the first floor, and a twin room on the floor above complete with an en-suite shower room. Each bedroom is blissful, with well-dressed windows and warm carpeting underfoot.

After a great night’s sleep, return to the delightful courtyard to eat breakfast to the sounds of birdsong and the gentle hum of the town awakening. The area is fully enclosed and an outhouse for bicycle storage is available upon request.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 king-size and 1 twin

Middleham, in Wensleydale, claims to be Yorkshire’s smallest town and is certainly one of its loveliest. Famous for its castle, once Richard III’s most treasured residence, it’s known as the ‘Newmarket of the North’ thanks to its links to the ‘sport of kings’. Several racehorse trainers are based here so, during your stay, you can expect to see and hear their horses en route to the gallops every day.

Those with a taste for the finer things in life will love the town’s great collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops, many of them just moments from your doorstep. But Middleham is set in the beautiful countryside where Coverdale and Wensleydale meet, so there are plenty of reasons to explore further afield too.

Just 2.5 miles out of the village is the fantastic Forbidden Corner, regularly voted the best family attraction in Yorkshire and a great day out even if there are no children in your party.

In the opposite direction, the charming market town of Leyburn (2 miles) has traditional shops, pubs and cafes all gathered around a handsome town square. As well as a busy market every Friday, the town is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London. The nearby historic town of Richmond (11.5 miles) is another great option for a day out and enjoys a scenic setting along the River Swale.

A wealth of other pretty villages and stunning natural sights are within close range, including Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle, both under 9 miles away. If walking is your passion, the surrounding Yorkshire Dales will feel like paradise, with a variety of excellent gastropubs where you can enjoy a well-earned pit-stop along the way.

I would not hesitate to recommend this gorgeous cottage in Middleham that has several Choices of where to eat or have a wee drink. Loved spending time in front of the wood burner with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

Lovely comfortable cottage in a great location. Lovely and warm after a day our exploring. Nice touch with a jar of doggie treats which my Labrador did her best to work her way through! We took our own large crate and plenty of room in dining room to keep it. Cottage much larger than it looks in the pictures. A great holiday thank you

Comfortable beds, spotless bed linen. When we needed to turn the heating up it reacted very quickly and the cottage was always warm enough. Always plenty of hot water for showers etc. Close to pub, (good pub food), well stocked shop and lovely walks to enjoy the views and to watch the horses going by to the gallops. The kitchen is narrow so can onlRead morey accommodate one or two at a time. The stairs to the top floor are steep. Hide

This was a lovely well equipped cottage, very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay very much. Middleham is nicely located for days out in all directions for the dales and moors. Wonderful walks at the back of the castle that go for miles so perfect for the dogs and walkers a like.
