Standing at 320m high, Roseberry Topping is a beloved landmark and a fantastic area for walking just 11 miles from Westerdale. The surrounding area has an open expanse of common, an abandoned quarry, woodland and moorland making for a diverse day out exploring the sights. For something a little more challenging, head off for a hike at Ingleby Incline (11 miles) and you’ll be rewarded by awe-inspiring views at every turn.

Whitby's narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby's smugglers evade the Government revenue men and tax collectors. They're a unique and much-loved design in this part of the world. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of the authentic maritime history of this ancient sea town. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby's gothic yards.

Probably the most visited and much-loved of Yorkshire's seaside resorts, Whitby is an idyllic location for a holiday. With its seaside heritage, excellent restaurants, independent shops and host of bars and cafes along its mediaeval streets, it has so much to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Whitby (20 miles) is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline; a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That's not to say it's stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire's coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside up-market restaurants and champagne bars.

Robin Hood's Bay (24 miles) is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is 15 miles away, a gorgeous little seaside village which is well worth a visit during your stay. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay are also all under 14 miles away, each with its own unique charm.

In the heart of the North York Moors, you could take a tour of the impossibly pretty towns and villages in the area, including Egton, Danby, Castleton, and Rosedale. Or head up on the high moorland of Castleton Rigg; we guarantee on a clear day it will take your breath away.

We had an absolutely fabulous stay. The cottage was extremely well presented and in a stunning location. We particularly enjoyed our short evening walks so we could see the owls and bats flying around.

The cottage sits in a lovely setting and both the interior and exteriors have been beautifully renovated to a very high standard which isn't surprising given Jan's designer background. The finishings and fittings were luxurious and have given us a lot of ideas that we could incorporate in our own home
