Imagine boutique hotel stylings in the gorgeous setting of an old stone barn. Now add panoramic countryside views, a romantic wood burner and a private patio for al fresco dining, and you’ll have this irresistible holiday bolthole just for two. Set within tranquil countryside above the peaceful village of Grosmont, it’s the perfect place in which to relax, recharge and revive.

This romantic retreat was fully renovated in 2023 and now has underfloor heating for a cosy-toes experience wherever you go. Its modern rustic style is hugely appealing, with a high, pitched roof in the open-plan living space that features natural, rugged timber, complementing boho-chic colours and sleek kitchen cabinetry. The kitchen itself offers all the equipment you’ll need to create delicious meals for two, and you can serve them up to enjoy at the sweet dining table by the window. In the mornings, make yourself a cup of coffee and throw open the patio doors to let the fresh air flood in while you get ready for the day ahead; in the evenings you can cuddle up by the wood burner and get really cosy, perhaps streaming a favourite movie on the Smart TV.

Interesting lighting and high-quality furnishings adorn the cottage throughout, and when it’s time for bed, you’ll find the theme continues. Your luxurious resting place has a double bed and ample storage space for your clothes, and leads into a sumptuous, en-suite shower room.

From your flagstone patio, you can marvel at the glorious vistas of idyllic countryside, and this sunny space, bounded by a traditional drystone wall, is perfect for al fresco aperitifs.

The pretty village of Grosmont is set in the scenic Esk Valley, where there are ample opportunities for hiking, rambling and cycling. A prominent part of the village is the heritage railway that transports you through beautiful countryside to Pickering, a thriving market town with a variety of independent shops and a wide range of restaurants, cosy pubs and bistros.

The historic seaside town of Whitby is just 9.5 miles away and is a must-visit while you’re in the area. Its narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby's smugglers evade the revenue men and tax collectors. They're a unique and much-loved design to this part of the world. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of the authentic maritime history of this ancient sea town. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby's Gothic yards.

With its seaside heritage, excellent restaurants, independent shops and host of bars and cafes along its medieval streets, Whitby has so much to offer. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Whitby is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline; a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That's not to say it's stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire's coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside up-market restaurants and champagne bars.

Robin Hood's Bay, 14 miles from the cottage, is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is 9.5 miles away, a gorgeous little seaside village which is well worth a visit during your stay. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay are both under 15 miles away, each with their own unique charm.

Inland, the impossibly pretty towns and villages of the North York Moors include Egton, Danby, Castleton and Rosedale, all less than 15 miles from your holiday home.

Excellent modern cottage with fantastic views both North and south. Well equipped and comfortable. The south facing patio must be a wonderful sun trap in summer.

This is a stylishly furnished and thoughtfully converted barn in a stunning location. We loved the views from the windows and being able to watch the North Yorkshire Moors steam trains in the valley below. There were good walks in the vicinity. Our hosts were friendly and helpful and provided a welcome gift and fresh eggs from the hens on the farm.
