Sink into the comfort of a five-star couple’s retreat, an ideal getaway at any time of the year. This sumptuous barn conversion cleverly combines all the charm of the old stone building with fabulous modern conveniences to create a truly relaxing and indulgent bolthole. Located on a hilltop above the pretty village of Grosmont, it has spectacular views of the beautiful countryside that surrounds it, while being within easy reach of the seaside town of Whitby and its variety of attractions.

Thanks to a thoughtful renovation in 2023, this former farm building is now a boutique-style rural bolthole, imbued with modern-rustic style for a restful and romantic escape. Underfloor heating throughout complements cool, high-quality furnishings, fabulous lighting and sleek design.

The open-plan living area is cosy and welcoming, combining spaces for cooking, eating and lounging in one room with a beautiful, high-pitched ceiling composed of tactile timber. Whip up some gourmet meals in the excellent kitchen, which has integrated appliances and plenty of cupboard space. There’s even a slimline dishwasher to make clearing up speedier. Dine at the breakfast bar before heading to the armchairs by the wood burner, ready for a quiet evening at home. There’s a Smart TV if you want to binge a favourite series.

When you’re ready to snooze, the double bedroom is sumptuously comfortable, with ample storage and a high headboard cleverly fitted into the old stone fire surround. Serene colours and natural textures make for a restful slumber. Your chic en-suite shower room features a generously sized, walk-in shower with a rainfall head.

Step outside onto your private patio and you can spend hours admiring the panoramic country vistas spread out in front of you. Here, you can dine al fresco meal or sip an aperitif as you relax in the fresh Yorkshire air.

The pretty village of Grosmont is set in the scenic Esk Valley, where there are ample opportunities for hiking, rambling and cycling. A prominent part of the village is the heritage railway that transports you through beautiful countryside to Pickering, a thriving market town with a variety of independent shops and a wide range of restaurants, cosy pubs and bistros.

The historic seaside town of Whitby is just 9.5 miles away and is a must-visit while you’re in the area. Its narrow twisting yards evolved over a thousand years ago to provide protection from Viking raiders and to help Whitby's smugglers evade the revenue men and tax collectors. They're a unique and much-loved design to this part of the world. Be prepared as you walk under the arched alleyway into the Rose and Crown Yard to gain a real sense of the authentic maritime history of this ancient sea town. It is one of the oldest, narrowest and most twisting of Whitby's Gothic yards.

With its seaside heritage, excellent restaurants, independent shops and host of bars and cafes along its medieval streets, Whitby has so much to offer. Playing host throughout history to Romans, Saxons, Celts and Danes amongst others, the town's rich heritage is immediately obvious. Straddling the River Esk and dominated by the 13th-century ruins of St Hilda's Abbey on the East Cliff, Whitby's crooked cobbled streets and picturesque harbour have been a magnet for artists and tourists alike for centuries. Providing the backdrop for some of Lewis Carroll's work, it was also famously the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Whitby is set on the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline; a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. That's not to say it's stuck in the past; in fact, Yorkshire's coastal villages and towns combine the traditional with the contemporary effortlessly, with trinket shops and tearooms sitting alongside up-market restaurants and champagne bars.

Robin Hood's Bay, 14 miles from the cottage, is one of the most popular coastal locations in Yorkshire, or the UK for that matter. The village is a maze of cobbled streets and higgledy-piggledy houses which seem to tumble down towards the sea. Sandsend is 9.5 miles away, a gorgeous little seaside village which is well worth a visit during your stay. With its handsome promenade, long stretch of beach, several excellent eating options and a world-class day spa, you could happily spend your whole holiday here. Staithes and Runswick Bay are both under 15 miles away, each with their own unique charm.

Inland, the impossibly pretty towns and villages of the North York Moors include Egton, Danby, Castleton and Rosedale, all less than 15 miles from your holiday home.

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful holiday cottage. A quiet, peaceful setting, with stunning views. The cottage was extremely well equipped and designed and decorated to offer the best creature comforts. The owners were helpful, and friendly. We will definitely be recommending Barn Owl's Nest, and hopefully returning ourselves.

Fabulous location. Lovely property: very comfortable and beautifully presented. Ideally located for any rail enthusiasts with the North York Moors Railway (NYRM) line visible from the cottage grounds at the bottom of the valley. Access to Grosmont on foot is an easy walk down the hill and by road if the water height and flow in the river at the forRead mored below the cottage is low (about a foot or less - there is a marker post), otherwise Grosmont is accessible by car via a slightly longer route.
