Escape to this peaceful hamlet of just 15 houses on the edge of Coverdale – the ideal country bolthole for anyone who wants to escape the everyday grind to spend their days hiking through the dales. The author James Herriot said about Coverdale, “I suddenly found myself in wonderland.” Visit Leyburn (5 miles) and hop aboard the heritage Wensleydale Railway to Scruton in the Vale of Mowbray. Head into Middleham where you can see the ruins of the first home of Richard III, or pack up a picnic and check out the waterfall at Hardraw Force (19 miles). You’re sure to be blown away by the beauty of England’s largest single-drop waterfall, a favourite spot of the artist JMW Turner.

Step inside this idyllic retreat and kick off your shoes in the boot room. There’s plenty of room for your outdoor gear – as well as your bike. Stroll to the cosy lounge and take a moment to make yourself at home in front of the wood burner, before heading to the kitchen to whip up dinner for your loved ones. Take in the views over the garden and the dale beyond while you prepare food. The dining room is a lovely space with a wooden-beamed ceiling, feature stone wall and open fire, as well as dual-aspect windows with views of the hamlet. A handy utility room and family bathroom round off the ground-floor layout. Up on the first floor, you’ll find that there are three lovely bedrooms to choose from – a king-size, a single and a twin (the twin has zip and link beds that can be transformed into a king-size on request) – as well as a stylish bathroom.

Outside the cottage you’ll be spoilt for choice as there are enclosed gardens to both the front and rear. Pull up a chair on the patio area and take a moment to breathe in that fresh country air.

Good location for seeing the Dales. Very comfortable cottage. One note of caution if you go out of season. Pubs in Middleham and Leyburn stop serving food before 8.00. Best to check beforehand. Thank goodness for the Co-op in Leyburn.

A lovely spacious property in a stunning and peaceful location. Was a lovely base for a family Christmas getaway. Comfy beds and living room, and cosy warm. The surrounding area is beautiful and we hope to return as my daughter loves seeing the horses on the local Gallops in Middleham.

Rose Cottage is a lovely, comfortable cottage, beautifully furnished and with very comfortable beds, a well equipped modern kitchen (it even has toast tongs!) and it was all scrupulously clean. It is in a small rural hamlet up single track roads, which could be a problem for some drivers (it was for us when it came to night driving). I'd love toRead more go back, but earlier in the year, when the evenings are longer. The whole area is beautiful, with so much to see. Hide
