A pretty village in Upper Wensleydale, Askrigg is 5 miles east of Hawes, the highest market town in England and home of the world-famous Wensleydale cheese. Askrigg itself is best known for playing the part of ‘Darrowby’ in TV series All Creatures Great and Small. The village thrived on textiles and knitting in the 18th century, and also became a centre for clock making. Today, Askrigg’s long main street, complete with old market cross and parish church, is home to a number of lovely stone houses and cottages alongside everything you need for a true taste of Yorkshire life: pubs, tea rooms, a bakery and village store. Its position within the National Park makes Askrigg an excellent base for exploration too, with walking (the climb up Mill Gill is a local favourite), cycling, horse riding and scenic drives all around. The tiered waterfalls at Aysgarth are 4 miles away, Semer Water – the largest natural lake in the county – the same distance to the south, and market town Leyburn 12 miles to the east.
Beamed ceilings, a wood burner and country-style furnishings welcome you into this comfortable holiday hideaway, one of a pretty terrace of stone cottages in the heart of the village. Step into the front hallway and you’ll feel at home straight away, walk on into the kitchen/diner and you’ll find all the essentials for a hassle-free holiday, including a dining table and chairs, additional bench seating and a door leading to the back garden. A wood burner on a feature stone hearth supplements the central heating for cosy nights in; curl up on one of the sofas in the lounge, catch up with your favourite programmes on the Smart TV, or choose a book or board game from the shelves. Upstairs, two bedrooms are at opposite end of the building. One has a king-size bed and an en-suite shower room, the second has twin beds and could lay claim to the separate family bathroom, making the cottage suited to either a gathering of friends or a small family group. Each bedroom has its own TV and enjoys lovely views towards the village and the Dales beyond – a sight to behold at any time of day.
The cottage has patio areas both front and back that offer somewhere to sit and enjoy the fresh country air or pull off boots after a walk. However busy or laid-back you want your holiday to be, this cottage ticks all the boxes!
